[00:00:00] I do have a stash of boys just in case. Give me my child. Oh, no. Ooh, we're in big trouble

[00:00:06] 48 minutes of dogs barking 48 minutes of dogs barking 48 minutes of dogs barking

[00:00:28] 48 minutes of dog barking 48 minutes of dog barking

[00:00:40] There's worse things to be excited about I understand but like I uh I think novelty

[00:00:46] how we react to novelty changes as we get older and um I think yeah as we older novelty changes I

[00:00:57] think the comforts become more important like a good pair of pants good pair of socks like I never

[00:01:04] I know geez man like if I got like a really good like couple pairs of socks from someone yeah

[00:01:09] all days like now yeah like fuck yeah well you know as kids you hate getting socks and shit yeah

[00:01:16] because there's so much cooler shit to be stimulated by but like as an adult it's like well all the

[00:01:21] cool shit I could kind of buy for myself mm-hmm but you know maybe maybe you forget to take care

[00:01:29] of yourself in some sort of way oh for sure or like you know you have a hard time justifying

[00:01:34] spending like 25 dollars on a really good pair of like merino wool socks which is which actually

[00:01:40] would be cheap merino wool socks I was gonna say yeah I imagine people understand what I'm getting

[00:01:46] at I love medium tier Hanes socks yeah because it feels like they're made of like the beefy tea

[00:01:54] material they're soft and it feels so luxurious you need to step up your your side now I'm gonna I'm

[00:02:00] gonna hook you up with some some real yeah some real shit hit me on some game what do you got

[00:02:04] hit you on some games some stance some rork okay some some of that shit that's gonna make you feel a

[00:02:10] little different about life when you put your shoes on you go yeah about to fuck some shit up see I've

[00:02:15] heard those brands I don't know nothing about them it's just a little bit nicer okay like they they

[00:02:19] last a little longer what do you think about bombas they're fine I keep hearing ads for them on other

[00:02:25] podcasts they're perfectly fine socks um fine that doesn't set my toes to tap it fine okay so like they

[00:02:32] they're they're better fit they're comfortable they're good quality I think they're a good value

[00:02:37] for the money hmm I think if you're willing to spend a couple more dollars you can get something a

[00:02:42] little bit more uh hearty okay if I found out someone got me like bomba socks is like a Christmas

[00:02:48] gift I wouldn't be pissed I'd be like oh sick you know as long as they were a color like like what do

[00:02:52] you wear like like what are you wearing now oh uh this is these are like some generic uh hiking socks

[00:02:57] I bought off of Amazon like three or four years ago and they're all uh slowly disintegrating um I

[00:03:03] either need to retire them um they're like a good medium weight where I work like they're they're not

[00:03:10] too warm but they're warm enough that um like if I'm sitting at my desk yeah I'm not gonna be

[00:03:15] fucking freezing okay they're not like my uh my wool my Norwegian wool socks I have which I'm gonna

[00:03:21] be saving for one like it's you know five degrees out yeah my kids have some of those like really

[00:03:26] thick oh they're so far fur lines they are they're overkill unfortunately the warehouse I work in

[00:03:32] despite having some sense of climate control it like lags behind the outside weather as far as like

[00:03:39] what you expect the inside to be like because like it's a 1.2 million square foot warehouse like big

[00:03:45] yeah you can't really keep it at like 70 degrees so like you know no one's in like most people I

[00:03:52] work with are understanding that you know invest in a decent jacket some good socks you know whatever

[00:03:56] like sure a good beanie because it never gets like so bad that like you're like freezing you see your

[00:04:01] breath because first of all that's um like illegal right to operate a place like a space like that

[00:04:07] um among other things but there's been times like when we were switching from late summer to early fall

[00:04:14] weather where I would like wear pants because it's cold or I was gonna be cold that day right

[00:04:21] but I've been kind of warm the last couple days I'm like fucking dying no pair of pants it's like

[00:04:26] fucking just like shoot me and exact opposite wear a pair of shorts and like thinking like okay what

[00:04:32] do I have a jacket in the back of my car okay I'm just gonna wear I'm gonna look fucking goofy as hell

[00:04:37] but at least I won't be but at least I'll be oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah it's like when I was like oh my

[00:04:42] kid got sick oh yeah you know shit man I just had like I just had to bounce out of the house man

[00:04:48] I don't have a fucking like people don't know right I'm also that guy that people are like

[00:04:53] Brian you got kids I'm like that's I know of hey like some people give me a weird look at some

[00:04:59] people have been like nice all right yeah this guy's living a life where things are ambiguous

[00:05:06] there might be there might not who knows who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men

[00:05:13] it is a mystery who knows if there's some nearsighted redhead children bopping into each other uh in

[00:05:20] some suburb of Memphis or something that's 40 minutes of dogs barking my name is Jason that's

[00:05:27] Brian where the ropes fly with abandoned well uh you may have noticed that we're not uh immediately

[00:05:33] jumping into some story about uh Hawk 2 or whatever yeah that's right it is our best of 2024 episode

[00:05:40] we're so glad to have you here it is our Christmas present to you because this will come out on Christmas

[00:05:45] day we're just so excited to talk about stuff that we like this year well at least I am I don't know

[00:05:51] about you I'm glad that it's like not we kind of have like a little bit of respite from

[00:05:57] uh some of our our topics and some of the ones that have been more prominent this year yeah the

[00:06:03] bothersome ones the uh the crypto scams and all that it's like take a break and we're doing that

[00:06:09] and that's nice yeah isn't it yeah and then we say this the next recording is going to be a vomit

[00:06:14] video I know well brace yourselves yeah that's uh that'll be a whole thing oh yeah yeah fuck man what

[00:06:23] are you uh I'm gonna be like one of those things are asking guys like hey man you know I get some

[00:06:28] shrooms right or you know do some cycle bin like I got buckets ready we're gonna make it happen yeah

[00:06:36] it's uh so I I was trying to and this is a very weird thing to say but I was trying to like prep

[00:06:43] myself for the gara monster home delivery episode which is going to be as I mentioned before I mention

[00:06:49] it every episode it is patreon exclusive if you get in at the $10 level before the end of the year

[00:06:54] which means if you're listening to this on Christmas day you have a few days left but anyone who gets in

[00:06:59] at that level before the end of the year gets a 90 minute commentary track on this Japanese puke

[00:07:03] fetish video and so I was like okay I gotta MST3K writers will sit there and they'll watch the movie

[00:07:10] three or four times before they write a single joke right so I'm like okay I gotta I gotta watch

[00:07:14] at least part of this to kind of psych myself up and I realized like for the first 15 minutes

[00:07:20] it's all they pick her up from the airport and it's like talking to her on the way

[00:07:28] are there subtitles by the way no and so that's a whole other thing but we'll we'll muddle through

[00:07:34] it uh I'll see if I can find a subtitle for it so far I've not been lucky but you only find

[00:07:40] subtitles like for like my my stepsisters and stepmom will stop fucking me there was a great

[00:07:46] one that I found subtitles for and it was like I don't remember the full title but it was something

[00:07:50] like the the sexy nun helps with all these problems and it had the funniest subtitle I've

[00:07:58] ever seen on any porno and she's gone through all these different scenarios she's the nun she's

[00:08:03] helping out and you know all these guys are kind of just doing their fetishes with her and then at

[00:08:08] the end she's confessing to the priest's character and then getting it on with the priest right

[00:08:14] we have to exercise the demons in my pussy you know perfect whoever translated that just yes

[00:08:24] no no you hit it right speaking of demons in someone's pussy no that's there's no there's no

[00:08:29] way to do that there's no good way to use that there's well how can you I know oh jeez we're already

[00:08:37] going off the rails I know finished my first drink I know it's already starting it's already

[00:08:42] and I gotta catch a plane so I gotta like oh fuck shit 12 hour shift I know yeah we're in a bad

[00:08:48] we're in a bad way here we're like if we were a racehorse it'd be like guiding us with a carrot

[00:08:54] come on they got a gun in the other end yeah into the horse destroyer

[00:09:02] hey uh can I show you a video

[00:09:06] why not let's see what you know what a guy at work shows this to me I don't know what we talked

[00:09:11] about on the podcast or maybe we talked off mic but I have a co-worker who's a little little rowdy

[00:09:16] yeah I told them I told you if I uh ever that I would could ruin his life by explaining Chris Chan

[00:09:22] yes okay I did I did I was like I was like you know tell him like hey man uh you ever heard

[00:09:27] Chris Chan um in the earshot of a co-worker who is a bigger nerd than me and I just see his face he's

[00:09:33] on the other side of this guy he has his look on his face like don't don't do it don't do this

[00:09:37] don't put this don't put this in the air and he's like Christian who's Christian he like pulls

[00:09:41] up his phone he's like his mouth is just dropped he's just like oh oh yeah and so like okay I guess

[00:09:48] we have to explain like things yeah don't worry about them they're just trolls from the internet

[00:09:53] which also I think upset the nerdy co-worker that I could do a pretty okay decent Christian

[00:09:59] oh Julie

[00:10:04] you almost had me there you almost got it

[00:10:09] I need you to get all that stuff off the internet right now I'm working on it yeah just

[00:10:18] so my co-worker's like you just want to see like a really wild video and so he shows me this

[00:10:23] it's two liter explodes and stuns dog okay so we're first person camera down

[00:10:28] into what looks like a backyard or something okay oh god

[00:10:33] it's like a little whippet yeah a little whippet and a little dog is just chasing it around okay

[00:10:40] little boxer or whatever oh

[00:10:43] Jesus

[00:10:45] the dog is apparently okay

[00:10:47] Jesus it looks like the dog just like drops like all four legs go out from under him he hits the

[00:10:55] I'm sorry

[00:10:56] then auto plays to a uh

[00:10:59] Castlevania

[00:11:00] long play

[00:11:02] portrait of ruin blind run number six

[00:11:05] portrait of ruin oh boy

[00:11:07] he just showed it to me and I was like well I'm just expecting that someone had probably edited this and put like half-life 2 sound effects

[00:11:14] something yeah

[00:11:15] like put like the headcraft sound when they exploded

[00:11:19] but that dog just like flips over onto his back

[00:11:22] does not move

[00:11:24] to the two liter

[00:11:26] has left some sort of bark on the ground

[00:11:29] Jesus

[00:11:30] I'm glad the dog's okay but Jesus Christ

[00:11:32] it looks bad like it looks like that dog is just gone

[00:11:36] the dog is just

[00:11:37] the dog is stunned

[00:11:39] yeah

[00:11:39] it does what it says on the tube

[00:11:41] the video is not misleading

[00:11:42] yeah

[00:11:43] the same co-worker

[00:11:44] whose life I've ruined by explaining Chris Chan to

[00:11:48] is uh

[00:11:49] he made a two uh

[00:11:50] one guy one jar reference

[00:11:51] I'm like you know that guy has other videos

[00:11:53] you know he's on tiktok

[00:11:55] tell me more

[00:11:56] I'm like well there's one where he pulls a flathead screwdriver out of his uh

[00:12:01] his urethra and he's like oh

[00:12:03] I go from the wrong end

[00:12:06] and he's like he's like the big end first

[00:12:08] yeah

[00:12:08] I'm like corrupting this guy

[00:12:10] yeah

[00:12:11] he's already corrupted but it's like I'm feeding it

[00:12:15] I'm feeding this terribleness

[00:12:16] he's he's also one of those guys like you know how I get around being so fucked up

[00:12:19] get away with being so fucked up

[00:12:21] I'm like

[00:12:22] why he's like I'm really fucking good at my job

[00:12:24] he is

[00:12:25] yeah

[00:12:26] yeah

[00:12:26] but like he's also a guy

[00:12:28] like a nickname I have for him is Rosebud

[00:12:34] oh bye

[00:12:37] okay

[00:12:38] it's time for your mom's favorite part of the show

[00:12:42] it's time for the breath mint

[00:12:45] yeah so this is the breath mint best of 2024

[00:12:48] it's really good to start out with television

[00:12:51] we spend a lot of time with television

[00:12:52] especially I did this year

[00:12:54] I felt like there was a lot of good stuff out there

[00:12:57] I've got

[00:12:58] one of my first

[00:12:59] again this is not in any particular order

[00:13:02] but things that really stuck with me

[00:13:03] number one

[00:13:05] Fallout

[00:13:06] Fallout as a TV adaptation of an existing property

[00:13:09] is probably as good as you're gonna get

[00:13:12] the cast is great

[00:13:14] everyone in it is just at the top of their game

[00:13:17] it's really well written

[00:13:19] and it definitely feels like

[00:13:21] if a fan production got a big budget

[00:13:24] this is what it would look like

[00:13:25] and there's just a lot of love on screen

[00:13:28] I feel like it's

[00:13:29] it stands

[00:13:31] really really tall

[00:13:32] in a time when there's a lot of

[00:13:33] good but not great

[00:13:35] adaptations of things happening

[00:13:37] it's this

[00:13:38] and Last of Us

[00:13:39] as far as like video game stuff

[00:13:40] that's like really understood

[00:13:42] A. the source material

[00:13:43] and B.

[00:13:44] what you can do

[00:13:45] with television as a medium

[00:13:47] personally

[00:13:47] Ella Parnell

[00:13:49] fucking kills me

[00:13:50] I always liked her

[00:13:51] from Yellow Jackets onward

[00:13:52] but this is where I was like

[00:13:54] this is a star

[00:13:55] this lady's a star

[00:13:56] don't sleep

[00:13:58] and of course

[00:13:59] Walton Goggins

[00:14:00] you can't

[00:14:01] Walton Goggins

[00:14:02] he's a guy

[00:14:03] end to end

[00:14:04] entertaining Kyle McLaughlin

[00:14:06] almost forgot that he was even in that

[00:14:07] and

[00:14:08] it teases

[00:14:09] the new Vegas thing

[00:14:11] yeah

[00:14:11] I think

[00:14:12] what I enjoy about it is

[00:14:13] it being a

[00:14:15] West Coast

[00:14:16] Fallout story

[00:14:18] and

[00:14:19] it being

[00:14:21] having a place

[00:14:22] in the canon

[00:14:23] apparently

[00:14:24] of the Fallout story

[00:14:25] yeah

[00:14:26] I enjoyed the TV show

[00:14:28] quite a bit

[00:14:28] I enjoyed it way more

[00:14:29] than I thought I would

[00:14:30] yes

[00:14:31] I had some pretty low

[00:14:34] expectations

[00:14:34] but then like

[00:14:35] the first reviews came out

[00:14:36] and I first

[00:14:37] I started seeing the first rumblings

[00:14:38] on social media

[00:14:39] oh okay

[00:14:41] okay

[00:14:41] there's something

[00:14:42] there's something here

[00:14:43] I can fuck with that

[00:14:44] and I watched

[00:14:45] I think I went through

[00:14:46] the first season

[00:14:47] in a matter of a couple days

[00:14:48] because I had

[00:14:49] some down time

[00:14:50] well acted

[00:14:51] a good understanding

[00:14:52] of the source material

[00:14:53] a really good understanding

[00:14:55] of the humor

[00:14:56] that can be present

[00:14:57] in Fallout

[00:14:57] production value

[00:14:59] is pretty good

[00:15:00] the ghoul makeup

[00:15:01] looks great

[00:15:02] the special effects

[00:15:03] are just good enough

[00:15:05] in that way of like

[00:15:07] they're realistic

[00:15:08] but they also have

[00:15:09] something that feels

[00:15:09] like a little 50s sci-fi

[00:15:11] yeah like a B movie

[00:15:12] yeah

[00:15:14] it's just

[00:15:14] it's like wow

[00:15:15] they get it

[00:15:15] I mean that's why

[00:15:16] I feel about

[00:15:16] The Last of Us

[00:15:17] as well

[00:15:17] is that

[00:15:18] oh you understood

[00:15:19] the source material

[00:15:19] you got the right casting

[00:15:21] you got the right writers

[00:15:24] and it doesn't feel like

[00:15:27] you know

[00:15:28] like the first

[00:15:29] Resident Evil movie

[00:15:30] where it's like

[00:15:30] who is this for

[00:15:33] that is something

[00:15:34] I'm actually looking forward to

[00:15:35] next year

[00:15:36] is I'm gonna sit down

[00:15:37] with all eight

[00:15:39] Resident Evil movies

[00:15:42] I think it probably

[00:15:43] peaks in the second

[00:15:45] and third movie

[00:15:46] yep

[00:15:46] I would imagine

[00:15:47] I've seen them all

[00:15:49] I'm going back through

[00:15:50] and I'm gonna

[00:15:52] I'm gonna sit there

[00:15:53] and watch them all

[00:15:54] because I might want to

[00:15:55] embark on this journey

[00:15:56] with you

[00:15:57] okay

[00:15:57] just

[00:15:57] just for my own sake

[00:15:59] I was also thinking

[00:16:00] like oh I talk about

[00:16:00] the first Resident Evil movie

[00:16:01] but like oh what about

[00:16:02] the Resident Evil Netflix series

[00:16:04] oh god

[00:16:05] Welcome to Raccoon City

[00:16:06] yeah

[00:16:06] no that was the movie

[00:16:07] oh that was the movie

[00:16:08] oh wow

[00:16:09] there was a Resident Evil

[00:16:10] Netflix series

[00:16:11] that ran for one season

[00:16:13] I completely forgot about that

[00:16:14] people were mad

[00:16:15] because Wesker was black

[00:16:19] that's what you're mad about

[00:16:21] I think also

[00:16:22] it just had like a bad story

[00:16:23] it felt like a

[00:16:24] a really bad

[00:16:25] season one

[00:16:27] that could turn into

[00:16:28] a really good season two

[00:16:29] but we'll never know

[00:16:30] because

[00:16:31] well

[00:16:32] the guy who played Wesker

[00:16:33] died

[00:16:34] yeah

[00:16:34] that's kind of a big issue

[00:16:35] yeah

[00:16:36] whose name escapes me

[00:16:37] are you talking about

[00:16:39] he did

[00:16:40] Lance

[00:16:40] Lance Reddick

[00:16:42] Reddick

[00:16:42] thank you

[00:16:43] I got the first

[00:16:44] don't you rainbow

[00:16:44] road me

[00:16:45] motherfucker

[00:16:48] where's my sleigh roll

[00:16:50] I wish I was

[00:16:53] I wish I was

[00:16:54] LeVar Burton

[00:16:55] it's so good

[00:16:57] also one of the best

[00:16:58] Eric Andre appearances

[00:17:00] and it's

[00:17:00] don't you reading

[00:17:01] rainbow me

[00:17:02] don't you reading

[00:17:03] rainbow me

[00:17:03] motherfucker

[00:17:05] I think he actually

[00:17:05] says the n-word

[00:17:06] at the end of it

[00:17:07] it's brilliant

[00:17:07] it's brilliant

[00:17:08] Lance Reddick

[00:17:09] god damn

[00:17:09] and finding out

[00:17:10] that Eric Andre

[00:17:10] and Hannibal Burris

[00:17:12] were both like

[00:17:12] out of their depth

[00:17:13] when that was all

[00:17:14] happening basically

[00:17:15] they were just

[00:17:15] terrified

[00:17:16] Lance Reddick was

[00:17:17] genuinely a funny

[00:17:19] son of a bitch

[00:17:19] like if you ever saw

[00:17:21] there was a TV series

[00:17:22] called Corporate

[00:17:22] that he was on

[00:17:23] yeah I know of it

[00:17:24] fantastic

[00:17:25] and he's just

[00:17:26] funny as shit

[00:17:27] in that role

[00:17:27] I will give

[00:17:28] to his credit

[00:17:30] in the Resident Evil

[00:17:31] show

[00:17:31] not to get off

[00:17:32] the rails too much

[00:17:32] here

[00:17:33] that he is probably

[00:17:35] one of the best parts

[00:17:36] if not the best part

[00:17:37] of the show

[00:17:37] because he is able

[00:17:38] to

[00:17:38] so there's Wesker clones

[00:17:40] okay

[00:17:41] and

[00:17:41] Woam is like

[00:17:43] a comedic character

[00:17:44] oh

[00:17:44] okay

[00:17:45] and he's

[00:17:45] so he's able to be

[00:17:46] like the serious

[00:17:47] common collected

[00:17:48] like the father

[00:17:50] and also

[00:17:52] um

[00:17:52] he gets a little

[00:17:53] silly with it

[00:17:54] there's a version

[00:17:54] that's uh

[00:17:56] Wesley or something

[00:17:57] like that

[00:17:57] or Uncle Wesley

[00:17:58] and that's like

[00:17:59] the Wesker clone

[00:18:02] that uh

[00:18:03] like

[00:18:04] was wrong

[00:18:05] the wrong clone

[00:18:07] as it were

[00:18:08] he was the bad one

[00:18:09] okay

[00:18:10] but but yeah

[00:18:11] he's like

[00:18:12] has some really

[00:18:13] great comedic moments

[00:18:14] and just really

[00:18:15] great characters

[00:18:16] like being able

[00:18:16] like yeah

[00:18:17] what if

[00:18:17] you were as smart

[00:18:19] as this character

[00:18:20] but you were

[00:18:21] a sarcastic asshole

[00:18:22] that also didn't

[00:18:23] take shit nearly

[00:18:24] as seriously

[00:18:24] I'm into it

[00:18:25] yeah

[00:18:25] so it's like

[00:18:26] basically getting

[00:18:26] like really

[00:18:27] there's a scene

[00:18:28] where he's giving

[00:18:28] exposition

[00:18:29] while eating

[00:18:30] like a hamburger

[00:18:30] and he's just

[00:18:31] like yeah

[00:18:32] you know

[00:18:32] uh

[00:18:33] you know

[00:18:33] he like

[00:18:33] uh

[00:18:34] yeah

[00:18:34] he died

[00:18:35] in a volcano

[00:18:36] and this guy

[00:18:37] punched like a boulder

[00:18:39] you know

[00:18:40] just

[00:18:41] real serious

[00:18:42] shit

[00:18:43] like

[00:18:44] so were the ones

[00:18:45] that were left

[00:18:45] you know

[00:18:47] that's pretty fucking

[00:18:48] amazing

[00:18:48] but on the topic

[00:18:50] of Netflix

[00:18:51] they did

[00:18:53] yet another

[00:18:54] one season

[00:18:55] I don't know

[00:18:55] if they're coming

[00:18:56] back with more

[00:18:56] the three body

[00:18:58] problem

[00:18:58] that's another

[00:18:59] one that's on

[00:18:59] the list

[00:19:00] yeah

[00:19:00] we gotta have

[00:19:01] another uh

[00:19:01] Chinese billionaire

[00:19:02] to be

[00:19:03] to get murdered

[00:19:04] for that

[00:19:04] who's uh

[00:19:05] who's gonna

[00:19:06] step up

[00:19:08] looking at my

[00:19:08] watch

[00:19:09] well and that's

[00:19:09] uh that's about

[00:19:10] all for the show

[00:19:10] no uh

[00:19:12] but I do like

[00:19:14] the casting

[00:19:15] was always great

[00:19:15] in that

[00:19:16] I love to see

[00:19:17] BD Wong

[00:19:17] doing non-Marvel

[00:19:18] stuff

[00:19:18] it's nice

[00:19:19] to see him

[00:19:19] but most of

[00:19:21] the cast

[00:19:21] was kind

[00:19:21] of unknowns

[00:19:22] you had

[00:19:22] uh

[00:19:23] some of those

[00:19:24] great character

[00:19:25] actors whose

[00:19:25] names always

[00:19:26] escape you

[00:19:27] but it was an

[00:19:28] interesting adaptation

[00:19:29] it really stuck

[00:19:30] the landing

[00:19:30] as far as

[00:19:31] certain moments

[00:19:32] in the book

[00:19:33] and then some

[00:19:34] moments from the

[00:19:35] second kind of

[00:19:35] placed out of order

[00:19:36] but it made sense

[00:19:37] narratively

[00:19:38] it's you know

[00:19:39] the guys who did

[00:19:40] Game of Thrones

[00:19:41] so it's like okay

[00:19:42] they have a source

[00:19:43] material to work

[00:19:44] from they

[00:19:44] they can really

[00:19:45] get something

[00:19:46] happening here

[00:19:47] took a little bit

[00:19:48] of doing with

[00:19:49] they put on this

[00:19:50] this helmet thing

[00:19:51] to go into this

[00:19:52] game

[00:19:53] but the game is

[00:19:54] really communicating

[00:19:55] with aliens

[00:19:55] it looks a little

[00:19:56] silly at first

[00:19:57] but you eventually

[00:19:58] kind of stumble

[00:19:59] into it

[00:19:59] you warm up to it

[00:20:00] and just overall

[00:20:02] just like as an

[00:20:03] experience from

[00:20:04] end to end

[00:20:04] you know it's

[00:20:05] eight episodes

[00:20:05] they're longer

[00:20:06] than your

[00:20:06] traditional 45

[00:20:07] minute drama

[00:20:09] and I know

[00:20:09] two adaptations

[00:20:10] on my list

[00:20:11] so it's not a

[00:20:13] I'm not saying

[00:20:14] it's a bad year

[00:20:14] for original ideas

[00:20:16] in television

[00:20:16] I'm just saying

[00:20:17] that sometimes

[00:20:17] the adaptations

[00:20:18] can really get

[00:20:19] you

[00:20:19] and I think

[00:20:20] this one is

[00:20:20] exceptional

[00:20:21] just in the way

[00:20:22] that you know

[00:20:23] because there

[00:20:23] were several

[00:20:23] movies already

[00:20:24] made in China

[00:20:25] that were very

[00:20:26] very faithful

[00:20:27] and this one's

[00:20:28] a little bit

[00:20:28] more loose

[00:20:29] you know some

[00:20:29] characters are

[00:20:30] kind of combined

[00:20:31] and some

[00:20:31] characters are

[00:20:32] left out of

[00:20:33] the narrative

[00:20:33] entirely

[00:20:33] but they focus

[00:20:35] on the stuff

[00:20:35] that I always

[00:20:36] remember from

[00:20:37] the books

[00:20:38] and things

[00:20:38] that kind of

[00:20:38] made an impact

[00:20:39] in the story

[00:20:40] so like okay

[00:20:41] well I don't

[00:20:42] really feel

[00:20:42] that loss

[00:20:44] as much as

[00:20:45] someone maybe

[00:20:45] who is

[00:20:46] stricter about

[00:20:47] adaptations

[00:20:47] I feel like

[00:20:48] when you adapt

[00:20:48] something

[00:20:49] you can lose

[00:20:50] some stuff

[00:20:51] and still be

[00:20:51] okay

[00:20:52] but yeah

[00:20:52] three body

[00:20:53] problem

[00:20:54] really

[00:20:54] just a

[00:20:55] banger

[00:20:55] of a sci-fi

[00:20:56] series

[00:20:56] HBO really

[00:20:57] fucked up

[00:20:58] by not

[00:20:58] picking this

[00:20:59] one up

[00:20:59] to be honest

[00:20:59] yeah

[00:21:00] well you know

[00:21:01] HBO has a couple

[00:21:03] things in their

[00:21:03] pocket this year

[00:21:05] definitely not

[00:21:05] Doom Prophecy

[00:21:07] really

[00:21:07] oh no

[00:21:08] I heard it's bad

[00:21:09] well they have

[00:21:10] the Creature Commandos

[00:21:11] which it's not done

[00:21:11] yet so it's not

[00:21:12] on the list

[00:21:12] but I've been

[00:21:14] enjoying what I've

[00:21:14] been seeing

[00:21:15] because they got

[00:21:16] the whole DC

[00:21:16] license thing

[00:21:17] and they got

[00:21:18] James Gunn doing

[00:21:18] animated series

[00:21:19] and Alan Tudyk's

[00:21:20] in it

[00:21:21] anyway

[00:21:21] Creature Commandos

[00:21:22] check that out

[00:21:23] when you can

[00:21:23] it's not over yet

[00:21:24] episode 4 I think

[00:21:25] is dropping tomorrow

[00:21:26] so looking forward

[00:21:28] to that

[00:21:28] I wish I wish

[00:21:29] I could say

[00:21:30] the latest season

[00:21:31] of you

[00:21:31] but we have

[00:21:32] not finished

[00:21:32] that yet

[00:21:33] bummer

[00:21:33] what I have

[00:21:34] completed

[00:21:35] Penguin

[00:21:36] oh yeah

[00:21:37] you know

[00:21:38] again

[00:21:40] everything's a

[00:21:40] fucking adaptation

[00:21:41] I know

[00:21:41] but this is kind

[00:21:43] of where we are

[00:21:44] Colin Farrell

[00:21:46] just really

[00:21:47] disappearing

[00:21:47] into that

[00:21:48] makeup

[00:21:49] and into

[00:21:49] that character

[00:21:50] the Matt

[00:21:51] Reeves

[00:21:53] Batman

[00:21:53] universe

[00:21:54] feels really

[00:21:56] lived in

[00:21:58] and this

[00:21:59] kind of

[00:22:00] fleshes it out

[00:22:01] gives us a little

[00:22:01] bit more depth

[00:22:02] to what

[00:22:04] this world

[00:22:05] is about

[00:22:08] I feel like

[00:22:09] it is a better

[00:22:10] definitely better

[00:22:11] than what we got

[00:22:12] with the Justice League

[00:22:13] bullshit

[00:22:14] yeah

[00:22:14] the just real

[00:22:16] corny stuff

[00:22:17] and this feels

[00:22:18] not so grounded

[00:22:19] to like a fault

[00:22:21] but what I did

[00:22:21] like about

[00:22:22] the Batman

[00:22:23] is it felt

[00:22:23] like a

[00:22:24] procedural

[00:22:25] yes

[00:22:26] it was gritty

[00:22:27] and you're not

[00:22:29] seeing

[00:22:29] Batman

[00:22:31] as like

[00:22:32] this perfect

[00:22:33] detective

[00:22:33] yeah

[00:22:34] you're kind of

[00:22:35] seeing him

[00:22:35] fuck up

[00:22:36] so having a

[00:22:37] world where

[00:22:37] everything's not

[00:22:38] perfect or

[00:22:39] perfected yet

[00:22:40] are in their

[00:22:41] roles as we

[00:22:42] know them

[00:22:43] in the

[00:22:44] you know

[00:22:44] the media

[00:22:45] properties

[00:22:45] that they're

[00:22:46] coming from

[00:22:46] it's kind of

[00:22:47] fun

[00:22:47] it's kind of

[00:22:48] neat to see

[00:22:49] this interpretation

[00:22:50] of the Penguin

[00:22:51] that's a little

[00:22:51] scrappier

[00:22:52] that is like a

[00:22:53] little bit more

[00:22:54] of a different

[00:22:54] type of criminal

[00:22:56] like mastermind

[00:22:57] in a way

[00:22:57] how he's

[00:22:58] playing all the

[00:22:59] criminal families

[00:23:00] against each other

[00:23:01] to try and get

[00:23:02] power

[00:23:02] and like

[00:23:03] how he fucks up

[00:23:04] how he does right

[00:23:05] and at the end

[00:23:06] he is kind of

[00:23:07] on top

[00:23:08] in a way

[00:23:08] but you see

[00:23:09] so much

[00:23:10] that he sacrifices

[00:23:11] I'm not gonna

[00:23:12] say every single

[00:23:13] episode is a

[00:23:13] fucking banger

[00:23:14] but there's a

[00:23:14] few like

[00:23:15] it's better

[00:23:16] than the

[00:23:16] fucking

[00:23:16] Watchmen

[00:23:17] HBO

[00:23:18] shit

[00:23:18] while I liked

[00:23:19] that I can

[00:23:20] see what you're

[00:23:20] saying

[00:23:21] what if Dr.

[00:23:22] Manhattan

[00:23:22] was like a

[00:23:23] really boring

[00:23:24] dude named

[00:23:24] Calvin

[00:23:26] damn man

[00:23:28] this is a guy

[00:23:29] this is a guy

[00:23:29] that wrote the

[00:23:30] leftovers

[00:23:30] damn

[00:23:31] he's just

[00:23:36] so you know

[00:23:37] yeah

[00:23:37] I mean

[00:23:38] I tried to

[00:23:39] revisit it

[00:23:40] I'm like

[00:23:40] this is

[00:23:40] this just

[00:23:41] hurts

[00:23:41] not to go

[00:23:42] on a tangent

[00:23:42] the Watchmen

[00:23:43] thing also

[00:23:44] seems like

[00:23:45] surprisingly

[00:23:46] anti-woke

[00:23:47] well yeah

[00:23:47] I mean

[00:23:48] oddly conservative

[00:23:49] politics

[00:23:49] because like

[00:23:50] the first

[00:23:50] the first

[00:23:50] murder in the

[00:23:51] show is

[00:23:51] because the

[00:23:52] cop can't

[00:23:52] get his

[00:23:53] gun free

[00:23:54] yeah

[00:23:54] despite all

[00:23:55] that

[00:23:55] it's probably

[00:23:56] the first

[00:23:57] place a lot

[00:23:58] of white

[00:23:58] Americans ever

[00:23:59] heard of the

[00:23:59] Tulsa race

[00:24:00] riot so

[00:24:01] yeah

[00:24:02] it's a

[00:24:02] mixed bag

[00:24:03] it's a

[00:24:03] mixed

[00:24:03] yeah

[00:24:04] it's a

[00:24:05] we need to

[00:24:05] self-examine

[00:24:06] ourselves

[00:24:06] on that one

[00:24:07] just a touch

[00:24:08] yeah

[00:24:08] just a little

[00:24:09] bit critically

[00:24:10] but really

[00:24:11] just Colin

[00:24:11] Farrell disappearing

[00:24:12] into that

[00:24:12] makeup

[00:24:13] Christina

[00:24:13] Malati

[00:24:14] as the

[00:24:14] young

[00:24:15] daughter

[00:24:15] there

[00:24:15] the

[00:24:16] Falcone

[00:24:16] daughter

[00:24:16] yeah

[00:24:17] Sophia

[00:24:17] just

[00:24:18] fantastic

[00:24:19] some

[00:24:20] some red

[00:24:20] herrings

[00:24:21] of

[00:24:21] one

[00:24:22] character

[00:24:23] maybe

[00:24:23] perhaps

[00:24:23] being

[00:24:24] the

[00:24:24] scarecrow

[00:24:24] which is

[00:24:26] an interesting

[00:24:26] idea

[00:24:27] but just

[00:24:27] feels

[00:24:28] lived in

[00:24:28] it feels

[00:24:29] like

[00:24:30] the long

[00:24:30] Halloween

[00:24:30] not heavy

[00:24:31] handed

[00:24:32] but grounded

[00:24:33] but feels

[00:24:34] real

[00:24:34] in a way

[00:24:36] that I think

[00:24:36] a lot of

[00:24:37] Batman

[00:24:37] shit

[00:24:37] isn't

[00:24:38] that's

[00:24:39] the part

[00:24:39] of the

[00:24:40] Batman

[00:24:40] makes it

[00:24:41] my favorite

[00:24:42] Batman movie

[00:24:43] is it

[00:24:43] has this

[00:24:44] really nice

[00:24:44] tone

[00:24:44] this really

[00:24:46] great

[00:24:47] cinematography

[00:24:47] this attention

[00:24:48] to detail

[00:24:49] you know

[00:24:50] using old

[00:24:50] Russian camera

[00:24:51] lenses

[00:24:52] that have been

[00:24:52] adapted for

[00:24:53] like you know

[00:24:54] large format

[00:24:55] digital video

[00:24:56] cameras

[00:24:57] and getting

[00:24:58] that really

[00:24:59] unique bokeh

[00:24:59] that you can

[00:25:00] only get

[00:25:00] with like a

[00:25:00] Jupiter 7

[00:25:01] or Jupiter 9

[00:25:02] lens

[00:25:02] that you see

[00:25:04] in the

[00:25:05] Batman

[00:25:05] and I

[00:25:05] think

[00:25:06] you can

[00:25:06] see

[00:25:06] I think

[00:25:07] they probably

[00:25:07] use those

[00:25:07] lenses

[00:25:08] on a couple

[00:25:08] shots

[00:25:09] and

[00:25:10] Penguin

[00:25:10] there's just

[00:25:11] a little bit

[00:25:12] of art

[00:25:12] to it

[00:25:14] attention

[00:25:14] to detail

[00:25:15] yeah

[00:25:15] it's

[00:25:16] fun

[00:25:16] fucking

[00:25:17] watch it

[00:25:17] I can't

[00:25:18] say there's

[00:25:18] any other

[00:25:19] TV

[00:25:19] off the top

[00:25:20] of my head

[00:25:20] that I

[00:25:20] have

[00:25:21] watched

[00:25:22] extensively

[00:25:22] I tried

[00:25:23] watching the

[00:25:24] Rick and

[00:25:24] Mori anime

[00:25:26] it

[00:25:27] has its

[00:25:28] moments

[00:25:28] but also

[00:25:30] I'm just

[00:25:30] like again

[00:25:31] who the fuck

[00:25:31] is this for

[00:25:32] I got 10

[00:25:33] minutes into

[00:25:33] the first

[00:25:33] episode

[00:25:34] and said

[00:25:34] you know

[00:25:34] I'm good

[00:25:35] yeah

[00:25:35] it's

[00:25:37] I'm good

[00:25:37] I stuck

[00:25:38] with it

[00:25:38] because I

[00:25:38] was

[00:25:39] unemployed

[00:25:40] right

[00:25:40] right

[00:25:41] that's a

[00:25:42] very different

[00:25:42] situation

[00:25:43] yeah

[00:25:43] but I mean

[00:25:44] there's 15

[00:25:45] minute episodes

[00:25:46] and all that

[00:25:46] and there's

[00:25:47] a couple

[00:25:47] that are like

[00:25:48] huh this is

[00:25:48] like

[00:25:48] like this

[00:25:50] it feels

[00:25:51] like a

[00:25:51] throwback

[00:25:52] to early

[00:25:52] 90s anime

[00:25:53] that would

[00:25:54] have ended

[00:25:54] up translated

[00:25:55] with some

[00:25:56] competency

[00:25:57] ending up

[00:25:58] on like

[00:25:58] USA

[00:25:58] like Saturday

[00:25:59] morning

[00:26:00] okay

[00:26:00] it'd be a lot

[00:26:01] cooler

[00:26:01] it was just

[00:26:02] like its own

[00:26:02] IP

[00:26:03] oh yeah

[00:26:04] and not

[00:26:04] Rick and

[00:26:05] Mori

[00:26:05] because it

[00:26:06] feels really

[00:26:07] weird

[00:26:07] sometimes

[00:26:08] like

[00:26:08] oh there's

[00:26:09] a really

[00:26:09] interesting

[00:26:09] story here

[00:26:10] and it's

[00:26:10] a throwback

[00:26:11] to a type

[00:26:11] of anime

[00:26:12] that I

[00:26:13] think some

[00:26:13] people probably

[00:26:14] grew up

[00:26:15] with

[00:26:15] in a weird

[00:26:16] way

[00:26:16] uh

[00:26:17] I just

[00:26:18] wish it

[00:26:18] wasn't

[00:26:18] Rick and

[00:26:19] Mori

[00:26:19] I wish

[00:26:19] it was

[00:26:19] his own

[00:26:20] thing

[00:26:20] from one

[00:26:21] little I've

[00:26:21] seen of it

[00:26:21] it really

[00:26:22] does remind

[00:26:22] me of

[00:26:23] things like

[00:26:23] FLCL

[00:26:24] some of

[00:26:25] the wilder

[00:26:25] stuff that

[00:26:26] Shinichiro Watanabe

[00:26:27] does with

[00:26:28] like Excel

[00:26:29] Saga or

[00:26:29] these kind

[00:26:30] of wacky

[00:26:30] weird magical

[00:26:32] realism but

[00:26:33] it's like

[00:26:33] technology kind

[00:26:34] of stuff

[00:26:34] yeah

[00:26:35] Benobashi

[00:26:35] magical shopping

[00:26:36] arcade

[00:26:37] like there's

[00:26:37] um there was

[00:26:39] even maybe a

[00:26:39] scene or two

[00:26:40] ripped straight out

[00:26:40] of serial

[00:26:41] experiments

[00:26:42] lane like

[00:26:42] there's some

[00:26:43] real odd

[00:26:43] late 90s

[00:26:45] early 2000s

[00:26:46] techno fetishistic

[00:26:47] stuff that

[00:26:48] anime could get

[00:26:49] away with

[00:26:49] but that's

[00:26:51] this shows

[00:26:51] you like

[00:26:52] how much

[00:26:52] I've been

[00:26:52] like watching

[00:26:53] stuff that's

[00:26:53] been like

[00:26:53] serialized TV

[00:26:55] sure

[00:26:55] prestige or

[00:26:56] whatever

[00:26:56] but yeah

[00:26:57] the penguin

[00:26:58] it's fun

[00:26:59] it's interesting

[00:27:00] um

[00:27:00] the worst thing

[00:27:02] I can say

[00:27:02] about it

[00:27:02] is that some

[00:27:03] shit was

[00:27:03] obviously filmed

[00:27:04] on the volume

[00:27:04] which is my

[00:27:05] least favorite

[00:27:06] thing of

[00:27:06] everything

[00:27:06] it's not as

[00:27:07] miserable as

[00:27:08] the Mandalorian

[00:27:09] I'd rather

[00:27:10] fall into the

[00:27:11] fucking tiger exhibit

[00:27:12] at the zoo

[00:27:13] trying to scratch

[00:27:14] my nuts

[00:27:15] than watch the

[00:27:16] Mandalorian again

[00:27:17] the only other

[00:27:19] piece of TV

[00:27:19] that lives up

[00:27:21] to my

[00:27:21] high standards

[00:27:22] is oddly

[00:27:24] enough

[00:27:24] baby reindeer

[00:27:25] are you familiar

[00:27:26] with this one

[00:27:27] oh

[00:27:27] so it was a

[00:27:28] Netflix show

[00:27:29] it was based

[00:27:29] on a stage

[00:27:30] play

[00:27:31] this guy

[00:27:32] wrote about

[00:27:33] this woman

[00:27:34] who came

[00:27:35] into the pub

[00:27:35] he was working

[00:27:36] at and

[00:27:37] just glommed

[00:27:38] on to him

[00:27:38] it's this

[00:27:39] it's this whole

[00:27:40] show about

[00:27:41] obsession

[00:27:41] but he's also

[00:27:43] kind of an

[00:27:43] addictive

[00:27:43] personality

[00:27:44] and so he

[00:27:44] kind of lets

[00:27:45] her because he

[00:27:46] likes the

[00:27:46] attention

[00:27:47] right

[00:27:47] and it's

[00:27:49] fantastic

[00:27:50] and it has

[00:27:50] this you can

[00:27:51] tell it's

[00:27:52] straight out

[00:27:52] of the stage

[00:27:53] play moment

[00:27:53] because he

[00:27:54] gets up on

[00:27:54] stage and does

[00:27:55] this whole

[00:27:56] monologue

[00:27:56] near the end

[00:27:57] of the season

[00:27:58] and honestly

[00:27:59] season

[00:28:00] it's probably

[00:28:01] a one and

[00:28:02] done because

[00:28:02] there's really

[00:28:02] not much

[00:28:03] else of the

[00:28:03] story to tell

[00:28:04] right

[00:28:04] because it's

[00:28:05] probably a

[00:28:06] limited series

[00:28:06] as they call

[00:28:07] it but it's

[00:28:08] funny and dark

[00:28:09] and weird

[00:28:10] and it's

[00:28:11] an interesting

[00:28:11] portrait of

[00:28:12] a guy who

[00:28:13] desperate for

[00:28:14] attention allows

[00:28:15] this person to

[00:28:16] kind of consume

[00:28:17] his life

[00:28:18] I think about

[00:28:19] it a lot

[00:28:19] so that

[00:28:20] that tells me

[00:28:21] okay this was

[00:28:22] good this

[00:28:22] is something

[00:28:23] rang a bell

[00:28:24] this is like

[00:28:26] oh yeah I

[00:28:26] remember being

[00:28:27] like this

[00:28:27] about this

[00:28:28] girl in

[00:28:29] college I

[00:28:29] can see

[00:28:30] myself in

[00:28:30] this character

[00:28:32] that's not

[00:28:32] good but

[00:28:33] it's also like

[00:28:34] this is the

[00:28:34] mark of

[00:28:35] something that's

[00:28:35] well written

[00:28:36] and kind of

[00:28:36] and the

[00:28:37] performances are

[00:28:38] all over the

[00:28:38] place some

[00:28:39] of them are

[00:28:40] just bang

[00:28:40] on and

[00:28:41] then there's

[00:28:41] some side

[00:28:42] characters where

[00:28:43] you're like

[00:28:43] what show are

[00:28:44] you in

[00:28:46] I don't know

[00:28:46] it feels very

[00:28:47] much like

[00:28:48] something that

[00:28:48] channel 4

[00:28:49] BBC would

[00:28:49] have I'm

[00:28:50] surprised it

[00:28:51] wasn't it's

[00:28:52] also maybe even

[00:28:52] a bit too

[00:28:54] foul-mouthed

[00:28:55] and all that

[00:28:55] for channel 4

[00:28:56] so I mean

[00:28:57] who knows

[00:28:57] until we can

[00:28:58] get more

[00:28:59] black beer

[00:28:59] I think

[00:29:00] that's all

[00:29:00] the channel 4

[00:29:01] we're gonna

[00:29:01] get on Netflix

[00:29:02] moving on to

[00:29:03] the category

[00:29:04] of video games

[00:29:05] probably one of

[00:29:06] my favorite

[00:29:07] categories to

[00:29:07] talk about

[00:29:08] one of my

[00:29:09] top ones

[00:29:09] oh brother

[00:29:11] Animal Well

[00:29:12] did you play

[00:29:13] Animal Well

[00:29:14] Brian?

[00:29:14] I haven't

[00:29:15] because it's

[00:29:16] not on

[00:29:17] Xbox

[00:29:17] oh it's not

[00:29:18] oh shit

[00:29:19] I know

[00:29:20] I mean it's

[00:29:21] on PC

[00:29:21] I just

[00:29:22] I'm not in

[00:29:22] PC gaming

[00:29:23] lately

[00:29:24] I've heard a

[00:29:25] lot about it

[00:29:26] and I think

[00:29:27] the thing that

[00:29:27] always cracks me up

[00:29:28] is finding out

[00:29:28] that like the

[00:29:29] PS5 theme

[00:29:32] takes up more

[00:29:33] space on the

[00:29:34] hard drive than

[00:29:34] the actual game

[00:29:35] itself

[00:29:35] that is absolutely

[00:29:37] true

[00:29:37] it feels

[00:29:39] like people got

[00:29:40] excited about it

[00:29:41] the way that

[00:29:42] people got

[00:29:42] excited about

[00:29:43] Cave Story

[00:29:43] 15 or so years

[00:29:44] ago

[00:29:44] yeah

[00:29:45] it's almost got

[00:29:46] the same story

[00:29:46] you know

[00:29:47] it's this one

[00:29:48] it's the

[00:29:48] labor of love

[00:29:49] and it did

[00:29:50] get a lot of

[00:29:50] press because

[00:29:52] youtuber video

[00:29:53] game donkey

[00:29:53] had it as the

[00:29:54] first game

[00:29:54] on his fledgling

[00:29:56] publishing title

[00:29:57] big mode

[00:29:58] so it was a big

[00:29:59] mode game

[00:30:00] and he chose

[00:30:01] very well

[00:30:01] the creator

[00:30:02] Billy has gone

[00:30:03] on a bunch

[00:30:03] of other shows

[00:30:03] talking about

[00:30:04] why he did

[00:30:05] it's like

[00:30:06] you know what

[00:30:06] honestly

[00:30:07] Billy great

[00:30:08] glad to hear

[00:30:09] from you

[00:30:09] but it's gonna

[00:30:10] get overshadowed

[00:30:11] unfortunately

[00:30:11] because

[00:30:12] donkey's such

[00:30:13] a big

[00:30:13] personality

[00:30:13] and people

[00:30:14] you know

[00:30:14] it's that

[00:30:14] kind of thing

[00:30:15] at the same

[00:30:15] time

[00:30:16] it's just

[00:30:21] getting out

[00:30:22] of the well

[00:30:22] that's the

[00:30:22] whole game

[00:30:23] it collapses

[00:30:25] every little

[00:30:25] thing you love

[00:30:26] about old

[00:30:27] metroid

[00:30:28] you know

[00:30:28] everything you

[00:30:29] love about

[00:30:30] symphony of the

[00:30:31] night style

[00:30:31] gameplay

[00:30:32] even there's

[00:30:33] some stuff

[00:30:34] where it

[00:30:35] feels like

[00:30:35] out of some

[00:30:36] random nes

[00:30:37] game like

[00:30:38] a boy and

[00:30:38] his blob

[00:30:39] like there's

[00:30:40] right there's

[00:30:41] just all these

[00:30:41] little bits

[00:30:42] of inspiration

[00:30:43] or reference

[00:30:44] that are

[00:30:45] not overt

[00:30:46] again it's

[00:30:47] handmade

[00:30:48] he does all

[00:30:49] the animal

[00:30:50] noises himself

[00:30:51] you know

[00:30:51] all the music

[00:30:52] he made

[00:30:53] everything is

[00:30:54] done

[00:30:54] and there's

[00:30:55] a very clear

[00:30:55] stamp of like

[00:30:56] this is one

[00:30:57] guy's passion

[00:30:57] project

[00:30:58] it took like

[00:30:59] eight years

[00:30:59] to make

[00:31:00] and it shows

[00:31:01] every inch

[00:31:02] of the screen

[00:31:02] is packed

[00:31:03] with detail

[00:31:04] there's just

[00:31:04] the game

[00:31:05] is alive

[00:31:06] in this way

[00:31:06] that like

[00:31:07] a lot of

[00:31:08] I mean even

[00:31:09] Hollow Knight

[00:31:10] isn't nearly

[00:31:10] as alive

[00:31:11] as something

[00:31:11] like this is

[00:31:12] which is

[00:31:12] not to

[00:31:13] throw shade

[00:31:14] at Team Cherry

[00:31:14] it's just

[00:31:15] that's

[00:31:16] the amount

[00:31:17] of time

[00:31:17] and effort

[00:31:18] he was able

[00:31:19] to commit

[00:31:20] to making

[00:31:21] it just

[00:31:22] what he wanted

[00:31:23] and he did

[00:31:23] it and

[00:31:24] fucking salute

[00:31:25] to you

[00:31:25] brother Billy

[00:31:26] yeah it just

[00:31:27] feels like

[00:31:27] one of those

[00:31:27] indie games

[00:31:28] that only

[00:31:28] comes around

[00:31:29] every three

[00:31:29] or four years

[00:31:30] like an

[00:31:30] Undertale

[00:31:31] or something

[00:31:31] or vampire

[00:31:34] survivors

[00:31:34] or yeah

[00:31:35] and thankfully

[00:31:36] it was a hit

[00:31:37] because you

[00:31:37] know what I

[00:31:38] mean like

[00:31:38] thankfully

[00:31:39] just like

[00:31:40] those other

[00:31:40] games it got

[00:31:41] enough

[00:31:42] attention

[00:31:43] and all

[00:31:43] that to

[00:31:44] like okay

[00:31:45] there's

[00:31:46] there's still

[00:31:47] scrappy

[00:31:47] indies out

[00:31:48] there because

[00:31:48] if you

[00:31:49] are like me

[00:31:50] and you

[00:31:51] listen to

[00:31:51] Yahtzee

[00:31:52] or you know

[00:31:53] Stephanie Sterling

[00:31:54] or any of

[00:31:55] these other

[00:31:55] people that are

[00:31:56] like commentating

[00:31:56] on the state

[00:31:57] of video games

[00:31:57] it sounds

[00:31:58] pretty dire

[00:31:58] when those

[00:31:59] people are

[00:31:59] talking about

[00:32:00] it but

[00:32:01] then you

[00:32:02] get a game

[00:32:02] like Animal

[00:32:03] Well and

[00:32:03] it's a hit

[00:32:03] and you're

[00:32:04] like okay

[00:32:04] things are

[00:32:05] gonna be okay

[00:32:05] actually

[00:32:06] everything's

[00:32:06] gonna be

[00:32:07] fine guys

[00:32:09] another game

[00:32:09] that made

[00:32:09] me feel like

[00:32:10] everything was

[00:32:10] gonna be

[00:32:10] fine was

[00:32:11] Helldivers

[00:32:12] 2

[00:32:13] now Brian

[00:32:13] I know you

[00:32:14] played that a

[00:32:14] little bit

[00:32:14] at least

[00:32:15] yeah I

[00:32:16] gave up

[00:32:17] pretty quickly

[00:32:18] not because

[00:32:19] I disliked

[00:32:20] the game

[00:32:20] just because

[00:32:21] like scheduling

[00:32:22] and I feel

[00:32:23] like also

[00:32:23] every time I

[00:32:24] wanted to play

[00:32:24] with you

[00:32:26] we have

[00:32:27] different

[00:32:27] hours

[00:32:29] like you

[00:32:29] want to play

[00:32:30] at 1am

[00:32:30] and I'm

[00:32:31] like I

[00:32:32] can't keep

[00:32:32] my head

[00:32:33] up

[00:32:33] right

[00:32:34] well and

[00:32:35] it is

[00:32:35] definitely a

[00:32:36] game that

[00:32:36] is better

[00:32:36] with friends

[00:32:38] absolutely

[00:32:38] but

[00:32:38] even

[00:32:39] playing

[00:32:40] with

[00:32:40] randos

[00:32:40] though

[00:32:40] you'll

[00:32:41] still find

[00:32:41] a good

[00:32:41] teammate

[00:32:42] every once

[00:32:42] in a while

[00:32:43] yeah I

[00:32:43] did not

[00:32:44] hate

[00:32:45] I would

[00:32:46] like to

[00:32:46] probably go

[00:32:47] back and

[00:32:47] revisit it

[00:32:48] at some

[00:32:58] yeah

[00:32:58] well I

[00:32:59] mean it's a

[00:32:59] collaborative

[00:33:00] game so you

[00:33:00] always love

[00:33:01] those you

[00:33:01] know it's

[00:33:01] it's really

[00:33:02] hard to keep

[00:33:02] up with things

[00:33:03] like competitive

[00:33:04] shooters or all

[00:33:05] that and so

[00:33:06] something where

[00:33:07] you're have a

[00:33:08] team and have

[00:33:08] a goal I mean

[00:33:09] think about the

[00:33:11] lasting legacy

[00:33:12] of something like

[00:33:12] a left for dead

[00:33:13] or you know

[00:33:15] those ones where

[00:33:16] you're working with

[00:33:17] other people as

[00:33:18] opposed to

[00:33:18] man I would

[00:33:20] love another

[00:33:21] left for dead

[00:33:21] yeah I heard

[00:33:23] back for blood

[00:33:23] tried to do it

[00:33:24] and it just

[00:33:25] wasn't that

[00:33:26] wasn't it

[00:33:26] wasn't right

[00:33:27] it just didn't

[00:33:28] it was so

[00:33:29] close to being

[00:33:29] good

[00:33:30] yeah I don't

[00:33:31] know that's so

[00:33:32] hard getting

[00:33:33] people to

[00:33:33] cooperate in

[00:33:34] a game

[00:33:34] getting people

[00:33:35] to want to

[00:33:36] cooperate in

[00:33:37] a game and

[00:33:38] I think what

[00:33:38] held ever's 2

[00:33:39] does really

[00:33:39] well is that

[00:33:41] by essentially

[00:33:42] setting you up

[00:33:43] in a hopeless

[00:33:43] situation against

[00:33:44] all odds you

[00:33:46] and your

[00:33:46] teammates then

[00:33:47] kind of become

[00:33:47] bonded you know

[00:33:48] trauma bond or

[00:33:49] whatever but

[00:33:50] yeah like um

[00:33:51] the game design

[00:33:52] is such that um

[00:33:54] it's really hard

[00:33:55] to like troll

[00:33:57] each other

[00:33:57] oh it's easy

[00:33:58] but there's no

[00:33:59] um it's much

[00:34:01] more interesting

[00:34:01] to play the

[00:34:02] game cooperatively

[00:34:03] yes like it's

[00:34:04] not like playing

[00:34:05] an online racing

[00:34:05] game where you

[00:34:06] turn around

[00:34:07] drive backwards

[00:34:08] and try to

[00:34:09] fuck everyone

[00:34:09] else up

[00:34:10] there's enough

[00:34:11] carrot on a

[00:34:12] stick stuff

[00:34:12] gameplay wise

[00:34:13] that like you

[00:34:14] want to at

[00:34:15] least try

[00:34:15] right yeah

[00:34:17] you are definitely

[00:34:17] incentivized to

[00:34:18] try it yeah

[00:34:19] and again the

[00:34:19] more interesting

[00:34:20] emergent gameplay

[00:34:21] is trying is

[00:34:22] the fucking

[00:34:23] barely making

[00:34:24] it out alive

[00:34:25] for the 10 or

[00:34:26] so hours I was

[00:34:27] able to put

[00:34:27] into it I

[00:34:28] had a couple

[00:34:29] games where I

[00:34:30] would just like

[00:34:31] hop on people

[00:34:32] that were on

[00:34:32] my steam list

[00:34:33] I hadn't like

[00:34:33] played games

[00:34:35] online with for

[00:34:35] like years and

[00:34:36] just like oh

[00:34:37] hey what are you

[00:34:38] doing like you

[00:34:39] know I got a

[00:34:39] wife and kids

[00:34:40] now I'm like

[00:34:40] whoa what the

[00:34:41] fuck like some

[00:34:43] guy used to play

[00:34:43] world warcraft with

[00:34:44] you know like in

[00:34:45] 2008 oh wow

[00:34:47] you know just shit

[00:34:48] like that like it

[00:34:48] was it was a neat

[00:34:49] way to reconnect

[00:34:50] with some people I

[00:34:51] like knew from

[00:34:52] like YCS and

[00:34:53] like the something

[00:34:53] awful forums and

[00:34:54] yeah other places

[00:34:56] on the air net

[00:34:56] people who used to

[00:34:58] run left for dead

[00:34:58] servers that I

[00:34:59] used to like

[00:35:00] fucking religiously

[00:35:01] play on you

[00:35:03] know that had

[00:35:03] weird mods and

[00:35:04] and there was a

[00:35:05] point when before

[00:35:07] it was officially

[00:35:08] released by valve

[00:35:09] there there was

[00:35:10] some people that

[00:35:11] hacked together

[00:35:11] the left for dead

[00:35:13] one maps to

[00:35:14] play for dead

[00:35:15] two so stuff

[00:35:17] like that which

[00:35:18] was super fucking

[00:35:19] weird and fun

[00:35:19] and that was a

[00:35:21] neat social gaming

[00:35:23] aspect that I

[00:35:24] had had to I

[00:35:25] had an opportunity

[00:35:26] to experience in a

[00:35:27] while yeah

[00:35:29] so I really

[00:35:29] appreciate it so

[00:35:30] yes I I'm gonna

[00:35:32] agree with you that

[00:35:33] like Helldivers 2 is

[00:35:34] one of the best games

[00:35:34] of the year also on

[00:35:36] my list it's a bit of

[00:35:37] a toss-up I I want to

[00:35:38] give it to Persona 3

[00:35:39] reload only because

[00:35:42] Persona 3 is my

[00:35:43] favorite Persona game

[00:35:43] and seeing it so

[00:35:45] lovingly remade in the

[00:35:46] Unreal Engine with

[00:35:48] all these little

[00:35:49] quality of life

[00:35:50] improvements was nice

[00:35:51] and it really made

[00:35:53] me appreciate the

[00:35:54] history of the game

[00:35:55] more but I gotta

[00:35:57] give it really to

[00:35:58] like a dragon

[00:35:59] infinite wealth

[00:36:00] how'd I know

[00:36:01] how did you know

[00:36:02] yeah I know

[00:36:04] I'm a sucker for

[00:36:05] Yakuza games and

[00:36:06] and since the last

[00:36:08] one became turn

[00:36:09] based I've kind of

[00:36:11] been like well

[00:36:11] it's it's fine I

[00:36:13] kind of want more

[00:36:14] of the old

[00:36:15] curious style you

[00:36:16] know stuff but

[00:36:17] infinite wealth I

[00:36:19] it turned me around

[00:36:20] I was like no you

[00:36:21] know what no

[00:36:22] Ichiban rules the

[00:36:23] new the new system

[00:36:24] rules this is great

[00:36:25] because every quality

[00:36:26] of life improvement

[00:36:27] you could ask for is

[00:36:29] there you've got an

[00:36:30] entire bit of the game

[00:36:31] where you're separated

[00:36:32] into two different

[00:36:33] parties one of them

[00:36:35] dedicated to going

[00:36:36] back through and

[00:36:37] reliving the best

[00:36:38] moments of Kiryu's

[00:36:39] life in Kamurocho so

[00:36:42] the Yakuza fan in me

[00:36:44] was having that

[00:36:45] nostalgia you know

[00:36:46] but you're also

[00:36:47] having this other

[00:36:48] adventure in Hawaii at

[00:36:49] the same time and

[00:36:51] there's just so much

[00:36:52] game there it's a

[00:36:53] game with everything

[00:36:53] in it fishing and

[00:36:55] darts and this I

[00:36:56] mean I could sit

[00:36:57] here for an hour

[00:36:58] listing all the

[00:36:58] different stuff you

[00:36:59] can do there's a

[00:37:00] fucking fully blown

[00:37:02] Animal Crossing

[00:37:03] clone in this game

[00:37:05] yeah I forgot about

[00:37:06] that there's a

[00:37:07] there's a Pokemon

[00:37:08] fuck with people on

[00:37:09] segways the writing

[00:37:11] the segways is a

[00:37:13] hoot I love it

[00:37:14] it feels like

[00:37:14] there's so much

[00:37:15] more than there's

[00:37:16] ever been like every

[00:37:18] Yakuza game even

[00:37:20] from like the big

[00:37:21] jump from like five to

[00:37:22] six was huge right

[00:37:24] because six was such

[00:37:24] a huge game and

[00:37:26] then when they

[00:37:26] brought out zero

[00:37:27] zero was almost

[00:37:28] bigger than six

[00:37:29] because you played

[00:37:30] both Kiryu and

[00:37:32] Majiba and then

[00:37:33] they remade one and

[00:37:35] two okay but then

[00:37:36] you've got seven you

[00:37:38] know which was the

[00:37:39] first in the like a

[00:37:40] dragon right series

[00:37:43] here in the States

[00:37:43] and that was a

[00:37:44] pretty big game but

[00:37:45] it feels like infinite

[00:37:46] wealth is like this

[00:37:47] is massive we've we've

[00:37:49] now gone out so far

[00:37:51] that we have two

[00:37:52] entire maps that are

[00:37:54] all huge and there's

[00:37:56] just so much to do

[00:37:57] because I spent I

[00:37:58] think probably the

[00:37:59] longest with that

[00:38:00] game than any other

[00:38:01] game I played this

[00:38:02] year which says

[00:38:03] something because I

[00:38:04] spent a lot of time

[00:38:05] with some games but

[00:38:07] yeah that that one

[00:38:08] dwarfed it all I

[00:38:09] think I spent somewhere

[00:38:10] in the neighborhood of

[00:38:11] 80 hours with that

[00:38:12] game this year and

[00:38:14] that's with taking like

[00:38:15] a month off to play

[00:38:16] Call of Duty for a

[00:38:17] while so it's it's

[00:38:19] pretty impressive for

[00:38:20] me as a 40

[00:38:22] something year old

[00:38:23] man to log those

[00:38:24] kind of hours because

[00:38:24] most games I play

[00:38:27] don't require that

[00:38:29] amount of time but

[00:38:29] also I don't want to

[00:38:31] play them for that

[00:38:32] long and then I just

[00:38:33] got to give a little

[00:38:34] tip of the hat to a

[00:38:36] small indie game from

[00:38:38] a group called Coal

[00:38:39] Supper the wacky you

[00:38:41] can finish it in two

[00:38:42] hours it's called

[00:38:43] thank goodness you're

[00:38:44] here it's a very very

[00:38:47] silly game thoroughly

[00:38:48] British you've got

[00:38:49] Matt Barry in maybe

[00:38:51] two roles I think he's

[00:38:52] at least one Billy

[00:38:54] Connelly you're this

[00:38:55] little bitty guy who's

[00:38:57] going around trying to

[00:38:57] fix all the problems in

[00:38:59] this little British

[00:38:59] town and it's silly

[00:39:01] it's perverse it's

[00:39:03] I heard about this

[00:39:04] yeah yeah it's just

[00:39:06] it's such a fun little

[00:39:07] game and it's one of

[00:39:08] those ones where you

[00:39:09] can pop it on and

[00:39:10] finish the game and be

[00:39:12] like oh that was a

[00:39:12] hoot and then be done

[00:39:14] and I like that sort of

[00:39:15] thing that's nice to

[00:39:16] see that what about

[00:39:16] you Brian any games

[00:39:18] stick out for you

[00:39:18] this year that we

[00:39:19] haven't talked about

[00:39:19] you know I haven't

[00:39:21] really played anything

[00:39:23] new there wasn't a

[00:39:24] lot of new stuff that

[00:39:25] really jumped out at me

[00:39:26] or that I felt like I

[00:39:27] was gonna have time

[00:39:28] for like you know

[00:39:29] Helldivers 2 I spent

[00:39:31] some time with we love

[00:39:33] Karamari re-roll oh

[00:39:35] which I think came out

[00:39:36] last year but I've

[00:39:37] spent some time with

[00:39:38] that and that is

[00:39:39] really just a super

[00:39:41] sweet fun comfort game

[00:39:43] for me and people

[00:39:44] always find that a

[00:39:45] little odd that's like

[00:39:46] oh that's one I love

[00:39:48] Karamari is one of my

[00:39:49] favorite games of all

[00:39:49] time just the tone

[00:39:51] the bizarreness of the

[00:39:53] writing the music

[00:39:54] the music

[00:39:56] it's just like it's so

[00:39:58] surreal and cheerful

[00:40:00] in a way that doesn't

[00:40:02] feel insincere

[00:40:03] yes

[00:40:04] I think that is why it

[00:40:07] resonates with people

[00:40:08] because it is so it's a

[00:40:10] little sugary it's a

[00:40:11] little it's up it's

[00:40:12] upbeat yes but it

[00:40:14] again it doesn't feel

[00:40:16] like a put on it

[00:40:17] doesn't feel like it's

[00:40:18] in positivity or

[00:40:20] upbeatness or

[00:40:21] colorfulness in the

[00:40:23] obfuscation of like

[00:40:26] you know the fact that

[00:40:28] the world sucks or

[00:40:28] something right because

[00:40:30] even the the king of

[00:40:31] space is like oh I got

[00:40:32] drunk and I lost all

[00:40:33] the stars geeking out

[00:40:34] yeah hey uh hey man uh

[00:40:36] you cool you cool to

[00:40:37] help me with this so

[00:40:38] that's just something I

[00:40:39] spent a little bit of

[00:40:40] time with this year

[00:40:41] trying to think besides

[00:40:43] Elden Ring I think it's

[00:40:44] really just been Elden

[00:40:45] Ring like Shadow of the

[00:40:46] Earth Tree is just

[00:40:48] almost better than the

[00:40:49] the main game it's a

[00:40:51] little bit more

[00:40:53] condensed I think the

[00:40:54] issue that most people

[00:40:55] have with it is that if

[00:40:57] you're a lore nerd some

[00:40:59] mythology gets a little

[00:41:00] confusing it answers some

[00:41:03] stuff and then actually

[00:41:05] seems to unanswer some

[00:41:06] things that people

[00:41:07] thought was set in stone

[00:41:09] with the mythology and

[00:41:11] some things as far as

[00:41:13] mythos go does get

[00:41:15] revealed and it's

[00:41:16] unsatisfying or like

[00:41:17] this doesn't this doesn't

[00:41:18] feel totally correct uh

[00:41:21] that's the biggest

[00:41:22] criticism I seem to

[00:41:23] seem to get from

[00:41:24] people and even then

[00:41:25] they will still say

[00:41:26] like what what a great

[00:41:28] game what a great

[00:41:29] experience people have

[00:41:30] been doing you know

[00:41:31] different playthroughs

[00:41:32] you know you've got

[00:41:33] fist arts oh yeah

[00:41:35] yeah a couple spells

[00:41:37] that are kind of

[00:41:37] broken but in like a

[00:41:39] way that feel really

[00:41:40] fun and not cheap

[00:41:42] some interesting ways

[00:41:44] to change up your

[00:41:45] play style to experience

[00:41:47] the game differently

[00:41:48] because it is a much

[00:41:49] harder game but I

[00:41:51] didn't find it honestly

[00:41:52] that difficult maybe I

[00:41:55] just was locked in it

[00:41:56] wasn't like coming back

[00:41:57] to Bloodborne after

[00:41:58] like a year and

[00:41:59] realizing like my

[00:42:00] rhythm is completely

[00:42:01] fucked a lot of stuff

[00:42:03] just feels correct

[00:42:06] rhythmically input wise

[00:42:07] the biomes are really

[00:42:09] beautiful the enemy

[00:42:11] design is really fun

[00:42:13] the only complaint I

[00:42:14] have about the enemies

[00:42:15] is a lot of them have

[00:42:17] too many like endless

[00:42:18] chains it feels like

[00:42:19] yeah it's not like the

[00:42:22] base game or some of the

[00:42:23] other souls likes where

[00:42:24] like enemies they do like

[00:42:25] two or three hits at most

[00:42:27] there's some bosses that

[00:42:29] go on for like dozens of

[00:42:30] hits or dozens of

[00:42:32] attacks and you just it

[00:42:33] just feels a little

[00:42:34] exhausting but I do

[00:42:36] appreciate that they were

[00:42:37] trying to change up how

[00:42:39] you approach high risk or

[00:42:42] boss encounters and and

[00:42:44] things like that I just

[00:42:45] wish it was a little bit

[00:42:48] less turn that down a bit

[00:42:50] but also some really fun

[00:42:51] weapons it just feels like

[00:42:53] an interesting love

[00:42:54] letter to the base game

[00:42:56] and expanding on a lot of

[00:42:58] ideas and it's just

[00:43:00] fucking fun it captures

[00:43:01] the fun of exploring in

[00:43:03] the original game while

[00:43:05] condensing that experience

[00:43:06] it plays a little tighter

[00:43:08] honestly kind of points out

[00:43:10] where the game design in

[00:43:11] the original kind of falls

[00:43:12] flat in the base game

[00:43:13] there is just kind of like

[00:43:14] a lot of nothing in

[00:43:15] certain spots but in

[00:43:16] Earth Tree it's hard to go

[00:43:18] riding more than a minute

[00:43:20] in any direction without

[00:43:21] stumbling across something

[00:43:23] totally worth the money

[00:43:24] there's a reason why it's

[00:43:25] pretty much been getting

[00:43:27] millions of game of the

[00:43:28] year awards you know it's

[00:43:30] a DLC yeah that's such a

[00:43:32] shock isn't it like if you

[00:43:33] were to play it you would

[00:43:34] be like yeah this is Elden

[00:43:35] Ring 2 and I'm hearing

[00:43:37] that the new the new

[00:43:38] expansion is also going to

[00:43:39] be about the same level of

[00:43:42] interesting let's say I

[00:43:44] really just had a really

[00:43:45] great time being unemployed

[00:43:46] and playing the fuck out of

[00:43:47] that game I was just like

[00:43:47] all I did was like go to

[00:43:49] the gym and play Elden

[00:43:51] Ring and like hang out for

[00:43:54] like a month I'm like this

[00:43:55] is this is it was the only

[00:43:56] cool part about being

[00:43:57] unemployed plenty of time

[00:43:58] for playing Elden Ring and

[00:43:59] I'm still not done I'm

[00:44:00] still not I still haven't

[00:44:01] made it I still have some

[00:44:03] places I'm exploring I'm

[00:44:05] taking my time I'm not

[00:44:07] rushing I got to like I

[00:44:08] kind of got to the end

[00:44:09] game quicker than I had

[00:44:11] expected but I'm like fuck

[00:44:13] it I'm not done I'm gonna go

[00:44:14] back and like find all the

[00:44:15] other stuff I hadn't done

[00:44:16] and it's just like a fun

[00:44:18] weird game in some

[00:44:19] respects it just feels

[00:44:21] complete it just feels

[00:44:23] unique I say this knowing

[00:44:24] that there's been souls

[00:44:25] like games and souls

[00:44:26] boring games or you want

[00:44:27] to fucking call them

[00:44:28] yeah but it's like a

[00:44:29] distillation of everything

[00:44:30] that they've done it feels

[00:44:31] like it feels like a

[00:44:32] perfection of that idea

[00:44:33] as far as movies this year

[00:44:36] there's just so many and

[00:44:37] I'm gonna have to just

[00:44:38] pare it down probably my

[00:44:40] top movie of the year is

[00:44:42] The Substance just

[00:44:43] hands down it it's gross it's

[00:44:46] funny it's weird makes you

[00:44:49] feel bad for being horny

[00:44:50] ever and it does still at

[00:44:53] the same time have sort of

[00:44:55] kind of a message what

[00:44:56] more do you want out of a

[00:44:57] movie it's gross it's scary

[00:44:59] it's it's got great acting

[00:45:01] everybody in it is just

[00:45:02] hitting those marks there's

[00:45:04] there's really not much to

[00:45:07] complain about in the

[00:45:07] movie with the exception of

[00:45:09] how long the ending is but

[00:45:11] even that is just because

[00:45:12] like okay we get it it's a

[00:45:14] fun ending right I do

[00:45:16] agree the third act goes

[00:45:17] on a little long just

[00:45:18] trim a little bit here and

[00:45:19] there we'll be fine but

[00:45:21] uh I think it would not

[00:45:22] have been such an issue

[00:45:25] had the movie been a

[00:45:27] little quicker paced

[00:45:28] which is weird to say

[00:45:29] because I think the movie

[00:45:30] moves that pretty good

[00:45:31] clip yeah but it it

[00:45:32] definitely feels a little

[00:45:33] heavily weighted in that

[00:45:35] third act even though it's

[00:45:37] still a blast it just but

[00:45:39] it does fuck you're just

[00:45:40] like man all right how

[00:45:42] much how much more of

[00:45:43] this can I take it does

[00:45:45] start to try your

[00:45:46] patience even though it's

[00:45:47] still enjoyable right

[00:45:49] but I still just I got to

[00:45:51] give it up for to me

[00:45:51] more kudos even Margaret

[00:45:54] Qualley and I remembered

[00:45:55] something as I was talking

[00:45:57] about this again you know

[00:45:59] those are her real tits I

[00:46:00] yeah I heard that but I

[00:46:02] know man life is just just

[00:46:04] full of a series of

[00:46:05] disappointments yeah but

[00:46:06] no I remembered something

[00:46:08] else that television wise

[00:46:09] that I'd seen this year it

[00:46:12] not qualified to be on

[00:46:13] the list but it was a

[00:46:14] show called made she's the

[00:46:17] lead in that I was like

[00:46:18] oh yeah aside from death

[00:46:19] stranding she was also

[00:46:20] the lead in the show made

[00:46:23] but yeah she's she's out

[00:46:24] of this world of fucking

[00:46:25] Dennis Quaid what the

[00:46:27] fuck this is a disgusting

[00:46:28] pig man a filthy nasty

[00:46:31] man he only turn 50 you

[00:46:33] just you lose it and as

[00:46:36] you see this he's just

[00:46:37] chowing down on crayfish or

[00:46:41] something where he's taking

[00:46:42] yeah and the the sound

[00:46:45] effects are just so gross

[00:46:47] and everything's just

[00:46:49] obviously the movie's telling

[00:46:50] you this is a disgusting

[00:46:51] man and it's so unsubtle

[00:46:56] with any message it ever

[00:46:57] has it is like hitting you

[00:46:59] with a hammer over and over

[00:47:01] again do you get it yet yeah

[00:47:02] okay god stop at the same

[00:47:04] time it's still a hoot you

[00:47:06] can't not watch that movie and

[00:47:08] come away with anything other

[00:47:09] than like oh my god or that

[00:47:11] was awesome or you know like

[00:47:13] it evokes all those

[00:47:15] responses from somebody who

[00:47:16] watches it because I've

[00:47:18] showed it to my wife after I

[00:47:20] had seen it twice already and

[00:47:22] on the third viewing I was

[00:47:23] still like Jesus Christ this

[00:47:26] movie that's the sign of a

[00:47:27] good movie if you can watch

[00:47:28] it multiple times and still

[00:47:29] have that same yeah and the

[00:47:32] same thing is true for my

[00:47:33] other movie on the list which

[00:47:34] was a dune part two

[00:47:35] absolutely uh what a fucking

[00:47:38] movie what a hot jihad never

[00:47:40] seemed so awesome they really

[00:47:42] did make it look really good

[00:47:43] didn't it boy Dennis Devin you

[00:47:45] just this was the movie he was

[00:47:48] born to make I know that's

[00:47:51] hyperbole to say it but I mean if

[00:47:53] you've seen any of his other

[00:47:55] films and you kind of are clued

[00:47:57] into his visual style this is yep

[00:48:01] he's born for this shit he fucking

[00:48:04] loves it I mean going pure black

[00:48:07] and white for the the sequences

[00:48:09] on a different planet Austin

[00:48:11] Butler just being in the movie

[00:48:14] and being like yep this is not

[00:48:16] Elvis brother this is somebody

[00:48:17] way fucking different I forgot

[00:48:19] that's he did Elvis yeah of course

[00:48:22] also my favorite meme of uh when

[00:48:25] someone explains the rules of a

[00:48:26] game to me and I and I immediately

[00:48:29] forget them and you click it and

[00:48:30] what do we do well the the crossover

[00:48:38] meme with uh him kissing uh the

[00:48:40] bear and and then it's the smiling

[00:48:42] friends that you kiss your uncle on

[00:48:43] the mouth

[00:48:47] oh yeah there was smiling friends

[00:48:49] season two this year which was all

[00:48:51] sure was yeah that's definitely and

[00:48:52] that was kind of a fucking amazing

[00:48:54] surreal show but anyways yes back to

[00:48:56] dune 2 you kiss your uncle on the

[00:48:59] mouth yeah just I couldn't get

[00:49:03] enough I wanted more I wanted it to

[00:49:05] be you know twice the length but

[00:49:07] that's fucking insane I know that

[00:49:10] we're getting the dune series which

[00:49:12] you said is not good apparently is

[00:49:14] doo-doo peepee I've not had the free

[00:49:17] time to uh waste yeah uh it's like

[00:49:21] wow if I've got like an hour right I'm

[00:49:24] not gonna waste it on this yeah I'm

[00:49:25] not gonna waste it on something like

[00:49:27] I'm gonna be hate watching because I

[00:49:29] don't think personally like dune is

[00:49:32] that interesting I can see what you're

[00:49:36] saying but I mean is the ultimate

[00:49:38] gate-kept nerd shit I think for most

[00:49:42] white men's nerdy white men's

[00:49:45] childhood yeah you know you weren't

[00:49:48] smart enough your parents weren't

[00:49:50] crunchy enough yeah no yeah it was the

[00:49:53] cool like nerd that was never gonna you

[00:49:55] know immediately going to like move to

[00:49:57] San Francisco and murder a homeless

[00:49:59] homeless man kind of thing yeah like

[00:50:02] every adaptation we've had of dune

[00:50:05] since David Lynch though has just been

[00:50:07] diminishing returns and so the fact

[00:50:09] that we even got two good ones to begin

[00:50:11] with is nothing short of a fucking

[00:50:12] miracle yeah so I'm happy with what

[00:50:16] we got I'm very satisfied with dune part

[00:50:18] two I think even if there's nothing

[00:50:21] else of value that comes from this the

[00:50:24] fact that dune as a cultural object

[00:50:27] still continues is interesting to me

[00:50:29] because you know it was an old-ass book

[00:50:32] a guy who's just doing cocaine and

[00:50:35] and reading about uh you know Islam yeah

[00:50:37] being worried about the environment yeah

[00:50:41] hey I mean that the tweet about you

[00:50:45] know I love cocaine and is well it does

[00:50:52] really feel I mean if you read the book I

[00:50:54] just yeah yep this is very clearly what

[00:50:56] happened here it's just okay this is it

[00:50:59] just a visually beautiful movie again

[00:51:02] using the vintage Russian oh yeah era

[00:51:06] camera lenses adapted for film again the

[00:51:10] the scenes were were the emperor's

[00:51:13] daughter in that garden like I'm watching

[00:51:15] it at you know super I think I was

[00:51:18] watching like a 70 millimeter printer

[00:51:19] whatever okay at the theater I went and

[00:51:22] like doesn't mean like sitting there

[00:51:23] like just slightly turned off an edible

[00:51:25] and just being like oh yeah it's like

[00:51:27] a Jupiter 9 lens like I just told by the

[00:51:29] bokeh like oh yeah it's like yeah it's

[00:51:32] like a yeah it's like a definitely like a

[00:51:34] Soviet approximation of like a like a

[00:51:36] lens no sick it was like being like

[00:51:39] cool and the floor looks amazing right it's

[00:51:43] weird to think that like a movie I almost

[00:51:45] dozed off during because I was kind of

[00:51:48] high right but also the same time as

[00:51:50] being like yeah the intersection of your

[00:51:54] interests I think is is fascinating to me

[00:51:56] and like yeah there's this Jupiter 9 lens

[00:51:58] and also Florence Bo looks amazing yeah

[00:52:00] just like everything it does it really

[00:52:05] does it's not deep oh god I love all the

[00:52:11] Lisa Al-Geeb shit of course he would say

[00:52:14] he's at the Lisa Al-Geeb because he's at the

[00:52:15] Lisa Al-Geeb which was such a core part of

[00:52:18] the books and I think Lynch's Dune left

[00:52:21] it out to its detriment and so I'm like

[00:52:23] yes good we're back we're back on this

[00:52:25] shit we're back on our bullshit it's

[00:52:27] great the whole religious fanaticism

[00:52:29] aspect of it is like this is the core of

[00:52:32] the story I'm sorry there's not any other

[00:52:34] reason to call it the butlerian jihad because

[00:52:37] jihad is very specific and that's the

[00:52:39] word you need to use that's to me and I

[00:52:41] guess we got it you nailed it yes please

[00:52:44] more yeah and it was also one of the few

[00:52:47] times it felt like outside of like the

[00:52:48] popcorn bucket that like it kind of

[00:52:51] permeated like internet culture in a way

[00:52:54] that felt really organic and fun yeah

[00:52:56] yeah I'm like last year we had like

[00:52:58] barbenheimer and stuff like that much

[00:53:00] was fine but you know people like doing

[00:53:02] something doing the sands the sandworm

[00:53:04] something yeah their cat yeah oh it works

[00:53:08] by the way if you're if your cat is under

[00:53:11] the blanket and you start doing the that

[00:53:13] cat is coming for you it's fantastic

[00:53:16] the other movie I have so I have a bunch

[00:53:19] of other ones I'm just gonna name them

[00:53:20] off real quick the fall guy great little

[00:53:23] action movie the contestant a fantastic

[00:53:26] documentary about a real thing that

[00:53:27] happened to a guy that also ends with an

[00:53:29] interesting story about hope and people's

[00:53:31] joker and experimental weirds I mean to

[00:53:35] watch that story about someone's transition

[00:53:38] and also really giving it to Lord

[00:53:41] Michaels but my actual number one is

[00:53:44] long legs I mean I was a little on the

[00:53:47] fence when we saw it in the theater but

[00:53:49] I've seen it twice since and I think it's

[00:53:53] cemented itself for me as like this is an

[00:53:56] experiment this is someone you know it's

[00:53:59] Oz Perkins someone who's playing with form

[00:54:02] you're showing your roots and like okay

[00:54:04] silence of the lambs okay seven here's a

[00:54:07] scene you know that's kind of pulled from

[00:54:08] this we got a little map but it's making

[00:54:10] something interesting the more and more I

[00:54:12] see it the more Nicolas Cage's performance

[00:54:15] just stands out and the ending of the

[00:54:18] movie I think for me on repeat viewings

[00:54:21] gets better and better and I think there's

[00:54:22] a specific moment where you as the

[00:54:25] audience everyone is at there they're

[00:54:27] holding their breath and and then

[00:54:30] there's that release of tension and it's

[00:54:31] almost funny and then it's not quite

[00:54:34] possibly one of the better thrillers made

[00:54:37] since Silence of the Lambs and I just got

[00:54:41] to give it the props because it's just it

[00:54:42] looks like nothing else all the different

[00:54:44] details and the the background designs

[00:54:47] the way certain shots are held for certain

[00:54:49] very long shots if you watch the movie

[00:54:52] there's these very awkwardly long shots

[00:54:55] but it builds to this sense of like tension

[00:54:58] tension and unease and like something is

[00:55:00] wrong here it stunned me upon repeat

[00:55:04] viewings every time and I'm like okay

[00:55:06] well this clearly means that I'm enjoying

[00:55:08] this there's also like you know like the

[00:55:09] devil appearing and you know kind of like

[00:55:11] it's like Tyler Durden in Fight Club you

[00:55:15] know for one or two frames yeah is

[00:55:17] formally introduced in the movie true

[00:55:19] yeah because there are certain moments

[00:55:21] where you're seeing symbols and now that

[00:55:24] you've gone back through the movie and like

[00:55:25] oh yeah the second viewing of Long Legs was

[00:55:28] I think way more interesting way more

[00:55:30] rewarding than the first first time we saw

[00:55:33] it I was like this is this is fine yeah

[00:55:35] then I watched it on Halloween this year

[00:55:38] second time and I was like oh yeah this

[00:55:41] fucks yes the T-Rex music is just icing

[00:55:45] just a little you know this is again

[00:55:47] Nicolas Cage playing what I believe every

[00:55:50] boomer that really is in the T-Rex is

[00:55:53] like that I met that guy working at guitar

[00:55:56] center right more than once and I fucking

[00:55:58] hated it he also looks upsetting fucking

[00:56:01] yeah and it's like oh it's a visceral

[00:56:05] reaction it's that reaction you have when

[00:56:07] you like step in dog shit that's the

[00:56:10] reaction you have when you when you see

[00:56:12] the Nicolas Cage character interacting with

[00:56:15] normal people yeah everything dad the weird

[00:56:21] guys back yeah that is a line for the

[00:56:25] movie by the way for those of you who have

[00:56:27] not seen it that is a line from the movie

[00:56:28] and it's the weird guy and then he's in

[00:56:32] the car screaming and like just it's

[00:56:35] unsettling it's just it hits you with the

[00:56:37] heebie-jeebies you get the whammy you get

[00:56:38] a little bit shivers yeah just it's so

[00:56:42] effective and I think it's gonna be one of

[00:56:46] those ones where it's gonna last a little

[00:56:48] bit longer than most people might expect

[00:56:50] something like that you know I mean like

[00:56:52] there's gonna be a bit of a people are

[00:56:53] gonna see it again or people are gonna see

[00:56:55] it for the first time this coming year and

[00:56:57] they're gonna catch the vibe I think you

[00:56:59] know home video and streaming it's gonna

[00:57:02] find a bit more of its audience and and

[00:57:04] we're gonna see a little bit more people

[00:57:06] kind of coming along to that so is there

[00:57:07] anything films wise that stood out to you

[00:57:10] that we haven't had on the list thus far

[00:57:12] yeah it's you know dune um I saw a tv glow

[00:57:17] substance yeah I saw the tv glow you're

[00:57:19] right Furiosa another Furiosa okay another

[00:57:23] movie that like was fun but also did not

[00:57:27] need to exist Maxine Abigail hundreds of

[00:57:31] beavers Abigail was really good I think

[00:57:34] the stuff that I liked that I saw this

[00:57:36] year most of it came out uh last year I

[00:57:38] guess that is how it tends to be for me

[00:57:40] too yeah Alien Romulus was pretty fun um

[00:57:43] you know really a roller coaster ride some

[00:57:46] really great performances but my issue

[00:57:48] being uh that shit ending again great

[00:57:52] movie shit ending and I know you had a

[00:57:55] feeling about it well it's inconsequential

[00:57:56] because it doesn't really play into the

[00:57:57] larger narrative of the alien you know

[00:58:01] that doesn't really bother me all that

[00:58:02] much there's a lot of stuff like that

[00:58:04] like the game you know yeah so I mean

[00:58:07] that that's fine and that's gonna happen

[00:58:09] but you know what I do have a movie that

[00:58:13] everyone hates hmm I didn't hate what's

[00:58:16] that Joker 2 still haven't seen it what

[00:58:19] did you think I think it takes some risks

[00:58:23] and most certainly not all of them even

[00:58:26] halfway play out but the fact is

[00:58:30] adventurous risk-taking and tried to do

[00:58:35] something different I think it does a lot

[00:58:37] it's risk-taking to its own detriment

[00:58:40] right but when it works I mean there's

[00:58:42] some great cinematography there's some

[00:58:44] really great acting from uh Walking

[00:58:47] Phoenix the script is pretty shit but

[00:58:51] the musical stuff is weird in like a way

[00:58:55] that feels subversive there's really just

[00:58:58] not a lot out there like it yeah feels

[00:59:01] ambitious it's taking swings it's doing

[00:59:05] things it's really exploring Arthur

[00:59:10] Fleck's mental imbalance yeah and dealing

[00:59:14] with celebrity and like what's the value of

[00:59:19] being well known and it's escaping your own

[00:59:23] trauma mm-hmm but really just kind of what

[00:59:27] his downfall is buying his own bullshit

[00:59:29] right because as soon as he buys into this

[00:59:31] character that he's become he's no longer

[00:59:34] himself yeah it deals with do you want do

[00:59:37] you want to keep being the persona that

[00:59:40] people think you are or do you want to be

[00:59:43] authentic to yourself so it's almost a

[00:59:46] Kierkegaard thing about the self and the

[00:59:49] self that identifies the self and all that

[00:59:51] I don't think it's necessarily that deep

[00:59:52] of a movie but I don't know I don't

[00:59:55] think that's a bad way to read some of

[00:59:57] the we're gonna say Joker 2 is a

[01:00:00] philosophically deep movie I'm just

[01:00:02] saying like there's there's stuff there

[01:00:04] there's some interesting casting I think

[01:00:06] the thing I hate the most about honestly

[01:00:08] is that they're trying to film LA for

[01:00:10] New York mm-hmm and I just that this

[01:00:13] fucking rubs me the wrong way I don't

[01:00:14] know why but it's like this is supposed

[01:00:16] to be like a New England East Coast city

[01:00:20] right this is obviously filmed in LA or

[01:00:24] London and you can pass off London as New

[01:00:27] York in some respects if you shoot it

[01:00:29] right but for a movie that has a 200

[01:00:31] million dollar budget it doesn't feel like

[01:00:33] it and this is a movie you liked I'm just

[01:00:36] yeah I hate it okay there are some

[01:00:41] musical numbers they're really fun there's

[01:00:44] a scene there's a couple scenes in the

[01:00:46] courtroom they're just so fucking fun

[01:00:49] they're so fucking weird you can tell

[01:00:52] walking Phoenix is having a hell of a

[01:00:54] time it feels like it is trying to take a

[01:00:58] shot at like 70s masculinity or like what

[01:01:02] we think is a sophisticated person because

[01:01:04] Arthur Fleck his expression of Joker is

[01:01:07] both like this kind of like this agent of

[01:01:09] chaos but also like a man who's

[01:01:11] sophisticated above society there's like

[01:01:14] moments where like a cutaway for a musical

[01:01:16] for a musical bit where Lady Gaga is

[01:01:19] playing at the piano and he's like on the

[01:01:21] other end of the baby grand and he's got

[01:01:23] like his cigarettes the liar and like the

[01:01:26] ashtray and like you know he's kind of

[01:01:29] like smoking a cigarette he's kind of like

[01:01:30] fucking digging it and like kind of doing

[01:01:32] like the the frown head nod like okay it's

[01:01:35] kind of nasty like there's just something

[01:01:37] about that that's really there's some

[01:01:40] liveliness to it yeah something that feels

[01:01:43] lived in okay that I don't think you get

[01:01:47] with a lot of movies right now there's

[01:01:49] some good camera work again it takes some

[01:01:51] risks I wasn't bored if you were to listen

[01:01:55] to people on the internet or people like

[01:01:57] you knew when that movie came out like

[01:01:59] opening weekend you'd think that like you

[01:02:01] know it fucking gave you like super AIDS

[01:02:06] right yeah it gave you the kind of AIDS

[01:02:08] we're like man there's just there's just no

[01:02:10] hope man like just go lay down yeah yeah

[01:02:13] go yeah go lay down don't worry about

[01:02:15] man I'll get the door is is the rest of

[01:02:17] life is don't worry man I'll get the door

[01:02:20] you're that guy that everyone's like do you

[01:02:22] don't don't even let him get up man that

[01:02:24] might be the last time right the AIDS are

[01:02:26] that bad Brian's last Christmas kind of

[01:02:31] again like I'm kind of pointing out it's

[01:02:33] false right I think despite all that it

[01:02:36] ends up being like an interesting movie

[01:02:38] like if like this if a movie like this

[01:02:40] came out like mid 2000s it probably would

[01:02:45] have been a hit it would have been weird

[01:02:47] and quirky it would have been like oh wow

[01:02:48] you know it's like dying darko or some

[01:02:50] shit like oh are you wearing that stupid

[01:02:51] rabbit suit

[01:02:56] we're in a stupid human suit I don't

[01:02:58] know

[01:02:59] bitch

[01:03:02] okay

[01:03:02] my face Frank yeah get out of here with

[01:03:05] your arm tattoo and the whatnot so that

[01:03:08] person we know that has the dying darko

[01:03:10] tattoo

[01:03:10] mm-hmm I once went with them to Hammond

[01:03:14] Indiana one of the great toilets of this

[01:03:16] country I was gonna say why to pick up a

[01:03:18] pair of speakers oh okay from a

[01:03:22] Catholic Church that realized they didn't

[01:03:24] need them they were new in box the only

[01:03:27] thing is they were white and so getting

[01:03:31] back to St. Louis paint in black okay and

[01:03:34] we get to Hammond Indiana and boy it's

[01:03:38] depressing I think the newest building I

[01:03:40] saw was a laundromat who everything just

[01:03:43] felt worn in in a bad way it felt like a

[01:03:46] bad pair of shoes it felt like it's like a

[01:03:49] pair of shoes where you could feel every

[01:03:50] big gravel but sure we get this Catholic

[01:03:53] Church I guess the groundskeeper the

[01:03:56] building attendant or whatever comes out

[01:03:57] and greets us and he's got the speakers in

[01:04:00] the back of his in the camper of his

[01:04:01] pickup truck and you know we're loading

[01:04:04] it up as quick as we can because this

[01:04:06] dude's is weird like comes out wearing a

[01:04:08] giant like knit pillow it's a graphic knit

[01:04:10] pillow and the threads are from a distance

[01:04:16] because bigger fella close doesn't look like

[01:04:19] much but you get about 10 feet away from

[01:04:21] like oh it's it's like an eagle in front

[01:04:23] of the American flag and he's just like

[01:04:26] one of those guys that feels like he has

[01:04:28] never left this town yeah the whole entire

[01:04:31] world has passed him by he's just a guy

[01:04:33] being like yeah did you more I love it I

[01:04:37] don't care about the salt it's here to have

[01:04:39] fun but he's like he sees my cohorts

[01:04:43] tent too and we felt like we were trying

[01:04:46] to get this done without having to have

[01:04:48] like a conversation like that because it's

[01:04:50] like nothing makes me really more

[01:04:52] uncomfortable as a guy from a fucking dead

[01:04:55] end city like St. Louis is to be somewhere

[01:04:58] like Jackson Mississippi or a Hammond

[01:05:01] Indiana and have some local yokel come

[01:05:04] at me like I'm like this like crazy city

[01:05:07] boy yeah because like do you even know

[01:05:10] what a city is like and here's the sad

[01:05:12] part is like Hammond is I only think

[01:05:14] like a 30-minute drive from Chicago yeah

[01:05:16] but it feels like it feels like a complete

[01:05:18] it feels like a town that Stephen King

[01:05:20] would write about right and he sees the

[01:05:24] tattoo and he asks my cohort about the

[01:05:26] tattoo and you could I remember looking

[01:05:29] my cohort in the eye and we both have like

[01:05:32] oh fuck here we go and so he tells the

[01:05:36] guy like you know it's this movie Donnie

[01:05:38] Darko he has like some sort of manic

[01:05:40] episode and he wakes up in a golf course

[01:05:43] sand trap and he has this written on his

[01:05:47] arm and it's like the time coordinates

[01:05:50] for like the end of the world and this

[01:05:53] guy not even like just completely does

[01:05:55] does not even seem like any of this

[01:05:57] resonates this is a movie this is a

[01:05:59] reference to something he goes oh the

[01:06:01] end of the world you know my our preacher

[01:06:03] he talks to God he talks about the end of

[01:06:05] the world all the time you know and uh

[01:06:07] yeah we're just like cool yeah yeah

[01:06:11] all right man fucking help me I'm like

[01:06:13] one of those things we're like wow you

[01:06:15] know we really gotta get back to St.

[01:06:17] Louis can you help me low up that second

[01:06:19] speaker looking at the non-existent watch

[01:06:22] yeah we gotta go hey Chumley yeah and

[01:06:25] it's just like I remember using the

[01:06:27] bathroom and it was like I didn't realize

[01:06:29] that I was like oh yeah it's a Catholic

[01:06:31] grade school oh no and so it's like all

[01:06:33] all the bathroom stuff is super tiny so

[01:06:35] I just took like a super super deep

[01:06:38] piss into that kid urinal well I mean

[01:06:40] look what are you gonna do yeah what

[01:06:41] are you gonna do you gotta go yeah that's

[01:06:43] that's my Dine Darko tattoo story that's

[01:06:46] fantastic so our last thing tonight is

[01:06:49] gonna be the records of the year and I

[01:06:51] know that's more that's about the only

[01:06:53] thing I can speak of so for me

[01:06:57] personally I have been waiting for a

[01:06:59] new Johnny Foreigner record for several

[01:07:01] years I believe it's five years now and

[01:07:04] how to be hopeful came out in about

[01:07:07] September and I have been playing it

[01:07:08] pretty much non-stop it is they're

[01:07:11] playing the hits but they're also doing

[01:07:12] interesting new stuff as far as bands

[01:07:17] they came up in the early 2000s that

[01:07:20] had kind of an emo sound that were kind

[01:07:23] of of course the lead singer Alexi will

[01:07:26] always tell you yeah we ripped off a band

[01:07:28] called tube lords they still have made it

[01:07:31] their own thing they took a bit of a

[01:07:33] five-year break so that their bass player

[01:07:35] could have a baby they play a show or two

[01:07:37] but now they've really they've they've got

[01:07:39] a record out and they're now they're doing

[01:07:41] more shows and they're actually back and

[01:07:44] they're one of my favorites from the UK that

[01:07:47] do have this emo thing going and boy Alexi

[01:07:51] just writes these lines there's a song

[01:07:54] called the museum of useless things is

[01:07:57] fantastic there's a whole song called

[01:07:59] what the Alexi which is essentially his

[01:08:02] version of a hold steady song so he's

[01:08:04] doing more of a spoken word thing and

[01:08:07] there's a few tracks on there that are

[01:08:08] very experimental for them like okay one

[01:08:12] more is they usually play when they're

[01:08:15] playing some sort of sparse melodic song

[01:08:18] they'll usually end it with some chaotic

[01:08:22] 32nd thing where they're like you know

[01:08:23] we're gonna be a thrash metal band for a

[01:08:24] couple seconds they don't do that they

[01:08:26] just kind of let songs breathe there's a

[01:08:29] sense of maturity on it and everyone

[01:08:31] seems to be aware that they're getting

[01:08:33] older and there's this kind of weariness

[01:08:36] that happens the first line on the album

[01:08:38] for the song called the Rasheen gives

[01:08:40] advice now the first line on the album is

[01:08:42] it gets worse so the first song the

[01:08:46] album is he's calling his friend Rasheen

[01:08:48] for help and then the last song of the

[01:08:50] album is like yeah we're you know

[01:08:52] everything's gonna be fine and it's this

[01:08:54] kind of roller coaster of maturity I think

[01:08:56] that's kind of neat and you know the

[01:08:57] record's called how to be hopeful and a

[01:08:59] lot of the songs are about like yeah

[01:09:01] there's a whole song orc damage which

[01:09:03] is kind of out of place because it seems

[01:09:05] more like a metal track but it is also

[01:09:08] just about like yeah we're old yes we're

[01:09:11] gonna have fun anyway and that to me is

[01:09:13] like a punk band reckoning with itself

[01:09:16] sure things are different now yes you

[01:09:20] know this is it but we're still gonna

[01:09:22] have a good time and the record is a

[01:09:25] good time I always like to hear that

[01:09:26] the punk bands getting older and which

[01:09:30] also brings me to my second one which is

[01:09:33] Blood Hair and Eyeballs by Alkaline

[01:09:35] Trio another legacy punk band that I

[01:09:38] thought was done with when one of the

[01:09:39] members went to fucking join Blink-182

[01:09:41] I thought well that's it for them then

[01:09:45] but they got a new drummer and they kind

[01:09:47] of picked up right where they left off

[01:09:49] and straight out the gate just an amazing

[01:09:52] record from a band that's been around

[01:09:54] this long because I want to say 2001 so

[01:09:57] I mean they've been around for over 20

[01:09:58] years they're one of the only bands that

[01:10:00] I've ever thought about getting a tattoo

[01:10:01] of so you know you already know I'm a

[01:10:04] diehard and I'll forgive a lot of bad

[01:10:06] records but this one no forgiveness

[01:10:09] needed I've seen every song played live

[01:10:11] and they're all bangers I don't think

[01:10:13] there's a thing wrong with the album

[01:10:15] they're trying some new things but

[01:10:17] they're also bringing back some some old

[01:10:19] hits it's kind of nice they're doing a

[01:10:21] little bit of both even if other people

[01:10:23] think it sucks nope sorry you're nitpicking

[01:10:26] and biased bye-bye and then I got to give

[01:10:30] it up for Chromacopia by Tyler the

[01:10:32] creator every Tyler record is something

[01:10:35] new and this is no exception I've been

[01:10:40] fascinated by the fact that he got sexy

[01:10:42] red on a song she's on sticky and the

[01:10:45] fact that that song is having a bit of a

[01:10:49] resurgence on tiktok now where people

[01:10:52] are going back through sticky and playing

[01:10:54] the the horn section with whatever

[01:10:57] instrument they actually play so there's

[01:10:58] like a guy who did it on metal guitar and

[01:11:01] there's a guy who did it on oboe and

[01:11:03] like but they're all just like because

[01:11:07] it's a very simple chart so anyone can

[01:11:10] play it and so it's kind of got its

[01:11:13] second life there it's really fun I love

[01:11:15] Tyler lyrically I think he's really

[01:11:17] bridging the gap between something like

[01:11:19] a wolf and something like Igor somewhere

[01:11:21] in the middle is this record it's like oh

[01:11:23] that's best of both worlds brother this

[01:11:25] is this is it he's got nowhere to go it up

[01:11:27] I mean I really liked call me if you get

[01:11:29] lost it was a fun record that one felt

[01:11:32] just like ah I'm having fun this is kind

[01:11:35] of we're just being silly now and

[01:11:37] chromocopia does have a mission statement

[01:11:39] it is kind of more of a serious record

[01:11:41] but there are also songs like sticky where

[01:11:44] it's just like a fucking song about

[01:11:46] fucking it's great so and yeah you got

[01:11:49] sexy red and a little way in on sticky

[01:11:52] like yeah all right all right let's go

[01:11:56] guys little way in even sound awake I

[01:11:58] haven't yeah yeah okay wow they must

[01:12:00] so that someone must like slap him in the

[01:12:02] back really hard he's only on the record

[01:12:05] for 20 seconds and he makes the most of

[01:12:07] it I was gonna say that's about why I

[01:12:08] imagine you got a little lame before he

[01:12:10] like goes in apoplectic shock and he

[01:12:13] makes up for it with the fact that like

[01:12:15] oh imagine if you licked little Wayne

[01:12:20] I guess like if you lick the toad it'd

[01:12:22] be like doing one of those science

[01:12:23] experiments that you can only ethically

[01:12:25] do yourself like when like scientist

[01:12:27] injects himself with like radioactive

[01:12:29] like liquid for like x-rays and stuff

[01:12:32] like you could you couldn't make someone

[01:12:35] lick little Wayne I think Tyler's done

[01:12:37] it at least once but anyway yeah you know

[01:12:40] I people people are telling me that new

[01:12:43] Tyler Crater is like tight and shit and

[01:12:45] like I guess you know like I haven't

[01:12:47] listened to it because I heard Igor and

[01:12:51] Igor was probably my favorite record 2019

[01:12:54] yeah still on my favorite records the last

[01:12:56] couple years and uh you know I was like

[01:12:59] fuck maybe he's really gonna do like

[01:13:01] real music like rap music and and you

[01:13:05] know he he's one of those guys it's like

[01:13:07] seems to be like a reluctant rapper and

[01:13:10] like it's really more important of like

[01:13:12] his Wes Anderson shtick or whatever

[01:13:14] yeah like the rapping and like I'm like

[01:13:17] oh man maybe like he's really gonna do some

[01:13:19] cool shit like wow and then um call me

[01:13:22] if you get lost came out like no this

[01:13:24] oh he didn't like it this guy just wants

[01:13:26] me to buy a parachute sick you didn't

[01:13:28] like uh I didn't like calling you get lost I

[01:13:30] was like oh okay I also like the fake DJ

[01:13:32] drops and shit oh come on that's funny I

[01:13:35] I lost it at that shit no I hate I was

[01:13:39] like this sucks this DJ drum no it sucks like

[01:13:43] I don't I think oh this is a very

[01:13:44] unserious record and not in the way that

[01:13:46] I appreciate okay I can see that it's

[01:13:49] like oh okay dude like seriously go back

[01:13:50] to doing your fashion shit bro like that's

[01:13:53] cool and then it won a Grammy I think

[01:13:54] yeah cool like a guy like a guy a guy who

[01:13:58] was doing the equivalent of like will we

[01:14:00] make cool again will we like it's like

[01:14:02] yeah well that's always been a thing with

[01:14:06] with him though it's like yeah you know

[01:14:09] every once in a while you'll have a flower

[01:14:11] boy and then you'll have cherry bomb you

[01:14:13] know like there's no there's no telling

[01:14:14] where he's gonna go with anything yeah I

[01:14:17] mean I know what like that that line

[01:14:18] lumberjack though they call me

[01:14:20] lumberjack as I wish a brother would you

[01:14:22] know you know like okay that's pretty

[01:14:24] clever pull up in the what the fuck is

[01:14:26] that dog I mean like listen the record has

[01:14:30] a couple moments but like it does not I

[01:14:32] do not think it kicks half as high as

[01:14:33] Igor I think yeah like a fucking

[01:14:35] masterpiece I will not disagree at all

[01:14:38] on that like yours like probably one of

[01:14:40] the few records of last like five or six

[01:14:42] years right actually sat down I really

[01:14:44] like picked it apart and was like oh

[01:14:46] shit so maybe I'll give I'll give this

[01:14:47] new record listen but I swear to God if I

[01:14:50] feel like this dude is just like you know

[01:14:51] pull the rug out from under me and been

[01:14:53] like hey what if I sold you a $200 polo

[01:14:56] made in Malaysia made a little sweatshop by

[01:15:00] kids with burn marks on their necks I think

[01:15:04] no he does not he does not use another

[01:15:07] line like call me a little tea like baby

[01:15:09] clothes so I think he'll be fine

[01:15:11] god damn it young tea young come on me

[01:15:14] young I think I think too also like what

[01:15:16] that was neat about Igor is that people

[01:15:18] were really digging into the production

[01:15:20] mm-hmm and I think that's part of what

[01:15:22] makes that record really interesting is

[01:15:24] it's like people didn't know it was weird

[01:15:26] to find like out the zoomers didn't know

[01:15:28] what like lo-fi music was everything

[01:15:29] they were so used to being so overproduced

[01:15:31] and pro tools like oh it's not like

[01:15:33] listening to all by defenders versus

[01:15:35] like record on fucking Tascam 424 no mark

[01:15:38] two in some dude's basement in Germany like

[01:15:40] this is like a still relatively production

[01:15:42] wise a polished record yeah it just has

[01:15:45] some some aesthetic elements to it that

[01:15:49] callbacks to that style yeah yeah I think

[01:15:51] some of the equipment it's more like the

[01:15:53] equipment he's using not how it was

[01:15:54] mastered you know maybe a little bit

[01:15:56] hampered by the equipment use a boy you

[01:15:58] have this posture you're adopting like

[01:16:00] oh god I don't want to hear Brian going

[01:16:01] on about like well you know if he was

[01:16:03] using condenser microphones with a

[01:16:05] 45 axis basis off of the micro off of

[01:16:07] the sound source you know that could

[01:16:09] give him a different sort of mid cut

[01:16:11] and then you know that some people

[01:16:13] might but I'm sitting here going oh

[01:16:15] yeah he's right he's right yeah I'm

[01:16:16] just like fucking rambling I'm like

[01:16:18] yeah you know what my dad used to steal

[01:16:20] copies of mixed magazine from the

[01:16:21] grocery store for me so that's how I

[01:16:23] know this is how I know how I can even

[01:16:25] bullshit through half this anyways it's

[01:16:27] highbrow and lowbrow that's that's

[01:16:28] where you're at records I think I think

[01:16:31] this year was a pretty interesting year

[01:16:32] for music I was hoping for bands like

[01:16:35] Amal and the Sniffers and HiViz to

[01:16:38] deliver another fucking banger I think

[01:16:40] that Amal and the Sniffers record is a

[01:16:42] little bit of a victim of the band's own

[01:16:47] success true have you given it a listen

[01:16:50] I have yeah and and there's a few

[01:16:52] there's a few standouts my bikini my

[01:16:55] bikini chewing gum big dream you can't

[01:16:59] be doing that or whatever that sounds

[01:17:00] you shouldn't you should not be doing

[01:17:02] that yeah I think I think a lot of the

[01:17:04] lead songs the songs that people heard

[01:17:06] first yeah are the standouts and I don't

[01:17:10] know I got a soft spot for jerking that's

[01:17:12] a great lead track for track one side

[01:17:14] one yeah jerk is great like I just but

[01:17:17] overall it just feels like too reactive

[01:17:19] it's also too long for such a not

[01:17:22] necessarily a gutter punk but more like

[01:17:24] a riot girl type record it's too long

[01:17:26] yeah this is like two or three songs

[01:17:28] could be just I don't think I've

[01:17:30] listened to it front the back probably

[01:17:31] more than five times yeah I was like

[01:17:33] oh wow that's bummer like there's I'll

[01:17:36] just go back to the songs I like I have

[01:17:38] them on the list yeah I do not need to

[01:17:41] like go through that and like the high

[01:17:42] viz records fine mm-hmm I think I need

[01:17:45] to spend more time with it to have like

[01:17:46] a real definitive feeling but like I

[01:17:47] still think high viz is a great band I

[01:17:49] still think they're a fantastic live

[01:17:51] band mm-hmm I think that new record

[01:17:53] like the Amal and Sniffers has a couple

[01:17:55] songs that really stand out but on the

[01:17:58] whole I don't know if it sticks together

[01:17:59] that being said there are a few records

[01:18:03] out there that really surprised the fuck

[01:18:04] out of me I think first of all the new

[01:18:07] cursive the name of which Devourer

[01:18:11] Devourer yeah you're right really just

[01:18:13] the first listen I was like oh he's he's

[01:18:16] back on the juice the words which is

[01:18:19] which is a nice way of saying like oh

[01:18:20] this guy's gonna have to go to rehab

[01:18:21] again soon well yeah I mean the first

[01:18:23] track a track one side one I always

[01:18:25] judge an album by its track one side one

[01:18:26] and botch job like yeah that was it for

[01:18:32] me I'm like I'm locked in the courses

[01:18:33] this is not what you thought this life

[01:18:35] was gonna be like you know like all

[01:18:38] right it's just like that fucking that

[01:18:40] main melody that's just real fucking

[01:18:42] hectic mm-hmm it's really incredibly

[01:18:45] heavy lyrically sophisticated record it

[01:18:49] does not leave any confusion to what what

[01:18:54] feelings are being expressed not in

[01:18:55] amiguis at all now and I think is so

[01:18:59] focused and so and we talked before on

[01:19:02] previous episode I believe you brought

[01:19:03] the song Dark Star I think lyrically

[01:19:05] might be one of the strongest I think

[01:19:07] compositionally is also one of the

[01:19:09] strongest records but lyrically is like

[01:19:10] fuck man like I went after you said that

[01:19:13] I'm like let me go back and give it a

[01:19:14] fair listen to the lyrics it's been a

[01:19:15] second I'm like yeah yeah no this is

[01:19:17] well that in the lead-in to that song

[01:19:20] the song before is called Bloodbather

[01:19:22] whoo yeah I still think Dead End Days

[01:19:25] yeah is another like whoa where the

[01:19:28] fuck did this song come out like in

[01:19:29] songs like rookie there's only like one

[01:19:31] or two songs that I think are a little

[01:19:32] slumpish but it's only because the

[01:19:34] rest of record I think is a little bit

[01:19:35] more feverish and pace a little bit more

[01:19:37] directed and anywhere else in the

[01:19:40] cursive canon the songs that are a

[01:19:42] little the the lesser enjoyable songs

[01:19:45] would have been standouts on those so

[01:19:48] particularly the last couple records

[01:19:50] but I was like holy shit what a fuck

[01:19:53] and then and it it feels like it's been

[01:19:56] a widely ignored yeah because I think a

[01:19:59] lot of people wrote him off after a while

[01:20:01] well listen Tim Casher's back on the

[01:20:03] junk folks he's writing the hits not

[01:20:07] since him before he dies well well

[01:20:09] there's that but like not since Happy

[01:20:11] Hollow I think have I heard a cursive

[01:20:13] record this like vital to listen to this

[01:20:16] essential oh yeah I mean because like

[01:20:18] Happy Hollow whoo but yeah I think this

[01:20:20] one's right up there which is it's not

[01:20:23] damning with faint praise by the way

[01:20:24] this is someone you know I had domestica

[01:20:27] for the first first couple months it was

[01:20:29] out and I was screaming at everyone who

[01:20:32] would listen listen to this fucking

[01:20:33] record I swear to God so it's just

[01:20:36] somebody who knows it does feel like you

[01:20:39] know you had mama I'm swollen you had you

[01:20:41] know it's like good the whole discography

[01:20:46] good records yeah they're good records

[01:20:50] man Kim can't fucking touch it no

[01:20:53] absolutely not absolutely not no question

[01:20:55] but like good records but this one is a

[01:20:57] great record you know what I mean like

[01:20:59] there's it might arguably be the best

[01:21:01] cursive record it's really feels like

[01:21:03] neck-and-neck with ugly organ to me oh

[01:21:05] okay as far as uh just the focus and the

[01:21:09] the uh the pathos it is certainly a a

[01:21:13] vitriolic he's spraying venom on this

[01:21:16] album yeah there it's just it's just

[01:21:17] unapologetically open and pointed and

[01:21:21] fuck man some really great riffs I'm

[01:21:24] just it feels like everyone just fucking

[01:21:26] was locked in that's just how I feel

[01:21:28] about it and I you know I'm gonna say

[01:21:29] that's this is maybe my record of the

[01:21:32] year however hmm it's really hard to

[01:21:35] say because there is a toss-up here

[01:21:36] because there is another band that kind

[01:21:38] of came out of nowhere not necessarily

[01:21:40] out of nowhere but like a record that

[01:21:42] you know we really I think most people

[01:21:44] would say that oh man can pussy's got a

[01:21:45] new record I bet it slaps but no one I

[01:21:48] think was ready for I got heaven oh no

[01:21:51] I certainly was not the first time I

[01:21:53] gave a listen I was like oh shit oh

[01:21:58] fuck this is I mean I fucking probably

[01:22:00] listen that record every day at the job

[01:22:02] I had when it first came out and I think

[01:22:04] I was annoying the fuck out I'm just

[01:22:06] like this is you know the fucking time

[01:22:08] the fucking first song yeah track track

[01:22:11] one side one I got heaven boom boom like

[01:22:14] I mean that in a big dog loud bark our

[01:22:18] bark sorry like loud bark like just having

[01:22:20] those ones those two so I mean the

[01:22:22] first four songs are just absolutely like

[01:22:24] one after another just really run a

[01:22:25] gambit of what that band can do what

[01:22:29] missy can do vocally as just like an

[01:22:32] incredible front person vocalist you

[01:22:35] know also having your lead single have

[01:22:36] the lines you know what if Jesus Christ

[01:22:38] himself ate my fucking snack I mean it's

[01:22:42] a it's a it's a very angry horny

[01:22:46] thoughtful record yeah and the fact that

[01:22:49] like the all the lead singles all the

[01:22:51] stuff that's been put forefront is like

[01:22:53] the more melodic but heavy stuff but

[01:22:57] there's also like two or three songs in

[01:22:58] there just like fucking hardcore records

[01:23:01] or you just want to beat the show some

[01:23:02] dude with a shopping cart yes you know

[01:23:03] okay okay okay okay okay okay aching

[01:23:09] you know I'm the bass player whose name I

[01:23:11] who escapes me all the fucking time like

[01:23:13] he fucking hits the vocals and just you

[01:23:16] know adds this whole entire edge to the

[01:23:19] record it just really runs a gambit of

[01:23:21] like energy but it's all coherent you

[01:23:23] know it's not like a record where you're

[01:23:26] guitar tones or anything but you really

[01:23:28] do think about the feeling yeah the

[01:23:31] percussion just the impact the the vibe

[01:23:36] the the record embodies and might be my

[01:23:40] favorite show of the year oh seeing man

[01:23:42] can pussy live and just you know people

[01:23:45] ask me because you know big music nerd

[01:23:47] guy and people ask me like oh what was

[01:23:49] your favorite show of the year so far I'm

[01:23:50] like oh man I can pussy and they're just

[01:23:51] like what and like what was your favorite

[01:23:52] show like oh I saw pink I like I'm sure

[01:23:55] pink I have heard pink puts on oh yeah

[01:23:57] so I'm like I'm not gonna say like oh

[01:23:59] you really liked seeing pink in concert

[01:24:01] while we'll fucking pleble in but like

[01:24:03] it feels really weird that like you just

[01:24:06] want to like shout from the rooftops like

[01:24:07] this record fucking is amazing this is

[01:24:09] amazing live band I think what I really

[01:24:12] loved about seeing the live was that a

[01:24:14] lot of bands I feel treat St. Louis like

[01:24:16] a rest stop yeah and that did not all feel

[01:24:20] like the case here it felt like this was

[01:24:23] the same amount of energy they would

[01:24:24] give Chicago Atlanta and they gave it to

[01:24:29] a 700 cap room in St. Louis when they

[01:24:31] were you know selling out 23 cap rooms

[01:24:33] and other markets I think something I

[01:24:35] really enjoyed really was just how

[01:24:38] subversive it became of a performance

[01:24:40] live because when I'd seen them with

[01:24:43] AJJ and Joyce Maynard a couple years ago

[01:24:45] in Memphis I mean there's it was this

[01:24:47] kind of like a straightforward like

[01:24:49] fucking garage punk band and she was

[01:24:52] playing a lot more guitar like it just

[01:24:54] felt like a little bit more

[01:24:55] straightforward but I could tell they

[01:24:57] had the goods and I was like oh shit

[01:24:59] this man I heard some good stuff about

[01:25:01] this band holy fuck okay they got me

[01:25:02] okay I'm gonna pay attention to these

[01:25:04] guys and I kind of that was a lie but I

[01:25:08] still like every time they had a new

[01:25:10] record come out I give it a listen like

[01:25:11] they were not a band I consistently

[01:25:13] listen to like oh shit okay yeah what are

[01:25:14] they doing I'm like okay this record is

[01:25:15] cool and I forget to come back to it

[01:25:17] but the see her see Missy kind of do

[01:25:22] this subversive sex kitten thing yeah in

[01:25:26] between songs and really if you thought

[01:25:30] you were just gonna see like a fucking

[01:25:31] punk show and your idea of punk is

[01:25:35] really limited it probably blew your

[01:25:38] fucking brains oh yeah yeah just they

[01:25:41] have this woman who looks like a fucking

[01:25:42] smoke show talking about fucking capitalism

[01:25:45] and bullshit and like how Missouri is an

[01:25:50] anti-human state and it's like yeah

[01:25:53] actually it is this is a pre-anti-person

[01:25:56] place to be yeah St. Louis in particular

[01:25:58] feels pre-anti-person feels very pro-capital

[01:26:01] oh yeah it was very anti-human life and

[01:26:04] so it is also to have someone on stage

[01:26:06] criticize Missouri and St. Louis and not

[01:26:09] have it be like you know I'm from New York

[01:26:10] or whatever right you know really more

[01:26:12] like different like this is there's a

[01:26:15] issues in the United States they're

[01:26:17] being very well expressed in the state

[01:26:19] you live in and you should recognize it

[01:26:21] and resist it which I think is a much

[01:26:25] better argument than like like oh wow

[01:26:27] your pizza sucks anyway you're like you

[01:26:30] guys are dumb hicks yeah yeah it's more

[01:26:32] like if you're at this show you probably

[01:26:35] recognize something is wrong with your

[01:26:37] surroundings and your environment and

[01:26:39] how people are treated and you're not

[01:26:41] crazy for feeling that way which looking

[01:26:45] at some of the young people in that

[01:26:46] crowd I could really see the fucking

[01:26:48] gears turning and I'm like oh shit this

[01:26:50] is cool this is so fucking cool and also

[01:26:52] like being in the back near some of that

[01:26:55] stuff and seeing like the parents of

[01:26:57] some of these kids looking really

[01:26:58] fucking uncomfortable and I just wanted

[01:27:00] oh I was fucking having a blast watching

[01:27:04] that oh yeah like the probably last third

[01:27:06] that set was just watching these

[01:27:07] fucking dads trying to watch like

[01:27:09] football game on their phones and stuff

[01:27:11] they're just like just so uncomfortable

[01:27:13] in their stools and they're going red in

[01:27:16] the face oh dude like yeah your kid's

[01:27:18] gonna hate you and the kid has every

[01:27:20] right you fucking bloated piece of shit

[01:27:22] like yeah how's it feel like you've you've

[01:27:25] like yeah yeah dude what's up what's up

[01:27:28] man you thought shit was gonna be sweet

[01:27:29] you took your kid to a band called

[01:27:32] mannequin pussy bro yeah bro what you think

[01:27:35] was gonna happen they you know kumbaya I

[01:27:39] mean it was such a good fucking set fucking

[01:27:40] if you haven't listened to that record go

[01:27:42] fucking listen to it yeah and you know

[01:27:44] just say pussy yeah just say pussy just

[01:27:47] say pussy there's there's nothing wrong

[01:27:48] with it it's not a dirty word

[01:27:52] and boy if I had to pick a third record

[01:27:55] that's tough I know it is it really is I

[01:27:58] wish I could say hell mode again yeah

[01:28:00] right by if I had to go by my Spotify

[01:28:05] wrapped okay think probably I think

[01:28:08] probably it would be um chat pile oh okay

[01:28:11] cool world cool world all right I just

[01:28:14] love the aesthetic of that record the

[01:28:18] feeling it just feels nasty and worn and

[01:28:22] dirty and nihilistic in a way that uh I

[01:28:28] don't think it's been explored recently and

[01:28:30] some of them some of them but what about

[01:28:32] slip now who gives a fuck about slip now I'm

[01:28:34] not playing the eight string guitar while a

[01:28:37] dude beats the shit out of a keg with like a

[01:28:39] fucking wrench right like I'm sorry dude I

[01:28:43] listen to real music like bill bev de beau

[01:28:45] yeah that's right but like I don't know

[01:28:48] there's slip now it's got a couple slappers

[01:28:50] but um that record is like the first time I

[01:28:52] sat down like really listen to I'm like I'm

[01:28:54] actually like kind of like uneasy okay and I

[01:28:58] like that feeling when a record hits you in

[01:29:01] that spot and you're like oh I describe it

[01:29:03] as like it feels like a record written by a

[01:29:04] bunch of dudes they were doing crossfit in

[01:29:06] like a sweaty warehouse like fucking busting

[01:29:10] cigarettes drinking like dirty water from a

[01:29:13] tap and like listening to like an audio tape

[01:29:16] of uh the road just guys just fucking maxing out

[01:29:20] their reps just but also just chain smoking not

[01:29:25] having a window open it's hazy and they're just

[01:29:27] like cool I feel like shit you want to write a

[01:29:30] record and some other dude who's like lung is

[01:29:34] half half collapses like yeah let me go let me

[01:29:38] mic up the drum set the one song I really have

[01:29:42] listened to from that record over and over again

[01:29:44] is frown land I know oh yeah it just hits man it

[01:29:49] fucking it does what it needs to do damn it's

[01:29:53] dirty it's filthy yeah it's just a nasty ass

[01:29:57] little record is I'm a little bummed I missed

[01:30:00] him I think every time I mention this record

[01:30:03] on the show uh I just I'm bummed I missed him

[01:30:05] at uh off Broadway earlier this year but the

[01:30:09] next time chat poddle comes in yeah uh I

[01:30:12] definitely want to uh come see them and make

[01:30:15] it right yeah and also I found out what chat

[01:30:17] is it's like a runoff from like an extraction

[01:30:20] process of like lead oh shit okay so it's like a

[01:30:23] toxic runoff or like a toxic byproduct of a

[01:30:26] extraction process and apparently there's just

[01:30:28] piles of that shit all over certain parts of

[01:30:31] Oklahoma oh yeah so that makes sense that

[01:30:35] makes the the name even more like yeah this is

[01:30:37] yeah nasty it's just yeah fuck man there's

[01:30:40] also some shit that that guy says in that

[01:30:41] record you know just like you know uh I think

[01:30:44] it's like camcord or whatever he's just like

[01:30:45] play it again oh yeah play it again it's just

[01:30:51] oh yeah well it's like that um I was thinking

[01:30:55] it's like the idols sometimes some of the shit

[01:30:57] the guy says in idols really oh damn dude like

[01:31:01] you you're are you are you allowed to say that

[01:31:05] like yeah you're not saying anything necessarily

[01:31:08] filthy but the implications yeah there it is

[01:31:11] what your what your imagination fills in is

[01:31:14] quite quite something else and an honorable

[01:31:16] mention just because it's another band I I kind

[01:31:20] of regret missing uh their their recent stop here

[01:31:22] in st louis is the new cheek face oh gosh I didn't

[01:31:26] even realize they had a new one out I think I

[01:31:28] talked about it I think you did yeah yeah a really

[01:31:31] fucking weird upbeat record with insane lyrics and

[01:31:35] concepts I had no idea oh it's sorted you're damn

[01:31:40] right oh man yeah oh wow like as if lumpy in the

[01:31:44] dumpers made like a talking heads record oh yes oh yeah

[01:31:50] because lyrically is as absurd as a lumpy in the

[01:31:52] dumpers or a cal and the calories song or a soup

[01:31:55] activist song absolutely unhinged and funny and

[01:31:59] catchy well that's what caught my eye with what

[01:32:02] caught my ear with them when uh too much to ask

[01:32:04] came out I was like oh what the okay yeah like you

[01:32:08] know it's a song that's like very fucking funny but also

[01:32:11] like fucking slap it's like you know like to me the the

[01:32:14] ultimate song that's really fucking funny and weird but

[01:32:17] from a structural standpoint is like kind of phenomenal is

[01:32:21] like Catholic Girls by Frank Zappa yes it's like that's

[01:32:24] such an absurd fucking song but the vocal melodies and like

[01:32:29] that fucking breakdown it's such a cool fucking song oh if you

[01:32:34] were talking about talking heads I mean they did it all the

[01:32:35] time yeah yeah yeah you're right I can hear that influence

[01:32:39] all over cheek face like the talking heads especially like oh

[01:32:42] yeah he's it's like he's doing a little weird Alan there yeah in

[01:32:46] that like he's kind of tongue-in-cheek again like that we're

[01:32:50] we're in on the joke sort of but it's also America's local band

[01:32:55] I think there was there was a band here in St. Louis called

[01:33:00] Exploding Cigars and their band camp is still up thank God but

[01:33:04] they were like one of those bands that they would play the

[01:33:09] Firebird and we I think Bert stopped booking them because he

[01:33:12] just couldn't figure them out like because their songs are like

[01:33:15] yeah it's a song about uh uh raping a woman but it's okay and

[01:33:18] you're like huh huh but they were like doing like a weird like

[01:33:21] lounge singer thing oh boy but it was just like what the fuck is

[01:33:25] this who is who is this for yeah do you guys skin animals in

[01:33:30] your free time he's like is there like is there there's not not a

[01:33:34] lot of stray animals where you live huh they don't really last on

[01:33:36] the street that long huh I've always wondered about their

[01:33:40] collection of little shoes yeah yeah just like I went and like the last

[01:33:45] thing on like their Facebook page I think was like releasing a Christmas

[01:33:49] song and I'm like that was a song about like uh fucking getting a foot job

[01:33:53] from Santa

[01:33:56] foot fucking uh old jolly Saint Nick but instead of Saint Nick it's the n-word

[01:34:01] oh like that's like that was like the weird thing where I was like this is like

[01:34:05] really offensive I don't know if this is a bit like this feels like a unwell

[01:34:09] person right um at you know saying to a stranger I've

[01:34:14] I've sucked 32 dicks yeah

[01:34:19] yeah just like how do you respond to that what is it what's the what's the

[01:34:23] answer cheek face feels like the ideal of that kind of like strange band

[01:34:27] that's never gonna leave this town right but you're also never gonna forget

[01:34:31] them I'm never gonna forget exploding cigars because it's like it felt like

[01:34:35] someone watching someone confess to a crime

[01:34:41] they're all safe now like yeah what are you talking about that

[01:34:44] I read the statute of limitations so I can speak about this freely

[01:34:49] right so I have not caught up with cheek face because I think that like I said

[01:34:53] the last thing I have is the uh the too much to ask record yeah

[01:34:56] so good too much to ask too much ass too much ass too much well I guess that

[01:35:02] about does it for the year what another garbage year on this garbage planet hey

[01:35:07] there's gonna be like a new Coldplay record next year so we got we got that look

[01:35:11] forward to fantastic great yeah uh there might be another Barbie movie cool yeah

[01:35:18] you know you know I would love to see is Greg Irwin remake Boys Don't Cry or Sallow

[01:35:39] oh no Doom Generation let's have Cher and do a Doom Generation remake okay let's see here we could have the uh the all-male

[01:35:46] remake of Martyrs you know let's yeah let's shoot for the moon here oh gosh uh Martyrs remake with Jake Paul and Logan Paul

[01:35:56] ooh and just to be you know really authentic do it for real yeah

[01:36:03] no CGI we told Tom Savini to sit down yep no makeup we got this we're doing it live
